How to whiten teeth at home

To put it bluntly, at-home whitening methods won’t be as effective as what your dentist can do, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the time or money. It’s all about finding what works for your teeth and schedule. Lowenberg said that most at-home whitening formulas contain a gentler, less-concentrated formulation of hydrogen peroxide than what your dentist may use. Myers echoed the same sentiment but noted that at-home products can help remove lighter stains best if you have your natural teeth. She said if you’ve had any cosmetic treatments done (like composite bonding or veneers) to consult your dentist before trying any at-home remedies.

The first rule of thumb when starting your journey to pearly teeth is to find a whitening product that works for you. If you struggle with sensitivity, you’ll want to look for formulas that are designed for sensitive teeth and find a usage cadence that delivers results without feeling overwhelming. Depending on the time you have to commit to whitening, strips can be an easy tool to start with since you’re able to put them on discreetly while doing chores or going about your day.

To help you determine the best products for your teeth-whitening routine, here’s a summary of the most popular teeth-whitening products you can buy:

  • Whitening strips: These are easy-to-use options for your dental care routine. Apply them to your teeth and follow the recommended treatment time. Avoid going beyond the recommended treatment time to prevent any unnecessary sensitivity.
  • Whitening pens: Whitening pens are easy to take on the go and can be a more convenient alternative to gels. The pens can remove surface-level stains from teeth quickly.
  • Whitening kits: Kits typically pair two or more products together for more optimal results. From strips and gels to strips and LED devices, kits are the most effective when used over an extended period of time.
  • Toothpastes and mouthwashes: According to the dentists we spoke with, these are your front-line defenses against stains and discoloration. Find toothpastes and rinses that are formulated with whitening agents and they can help improve teeth color and enamel with consistent use over time.

Before starting any whitening routines, you’ll want to check if the products you want to use are approved by the ADA. The ADA’s whitening information page states that “peroxide concentration in at-home systems typically ranges from 10% to 38% carbamide peroxide,” and recommended treatment times are adjusted based on the peroxide concentration levels. In our research for this story, most at-home whitening treatments used 10% hydrogen peroxide formulas, with very few going over that limit.

Once you’ve started incorporating whitening products into your oral care routine, you’ll want to keep up with maintenance. “It’s important to follow good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups, to help prolong the effects of teeth whitening,” Wei said. “Additionally, avoiding foods and beverages that can stain teeth — such as coffee, tea [and] red wine — and [avoiding] smoking, can also help maintain a brighter smile for longer.”

FAQs

According to Wei, it is possible to whiten your teeth if they’re naturally a darker shade. He notes that professional teeth whitening will more effectively lighten the natural color of your teeth and that it’s important to consult a professional for your specific situation. “Keep in mind that the degree of whitening achieved may vary depending on the natural color of your teeth and the cause of the discoloration,” he said.

“The results of teeth whitening can vary depending on the method used and the individual’s teeth,” Wei said. “In general, you may start to see some improvement after the first few treatments, which can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.” He explains that for more significant whitening, it can take up to several weeks for desired results. “It’s important to follow the instructions provided by your dental professional for the best and safest results,” he said.

There are a handful of factors that will contribute to the effectiveness of your teeth whitening. “The duration of the effects of teeth whitening products can vary depending on the type of product used, individual oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors,” Wei said. “In general, the results of professional teeth-whitening treatments can last from several months to a few years, while over-the-counter whitening products may need to be used more frequently to maintain their effects.”
