Getting eight hours of sleep each night is hard enough as it is, but sharing your bed with a partner only makes achieving quality rest that much more difficult. As someone who becomes exceedingly cranky in the mornings after not getting my beauty rest, I’ll admit I’m not the best at opening up my sleep space to others. In fact, I’d be lying if I said I’ve never considered ending relationships just so I could go back to sleeping soundly, especially after lying next to a chronic tosser or — even worse — a deafening snorer.

I know, I’m being a bit extreme. Luckily, there are steps you can take before kicking your partner to the curb (or the couch) to ensure you both get comfortable sleep while lying in the same bed. The perfect formula will look different for every couple, whether that’s investing in a new mattress, using separate blankets or trying an adjustable-blade fan. To help you find what works, I asked my fellow partnered editors to share their sanity-saving sleep products and also talked to sleep medicine experts about what they recommend. Don’t go another sleepless night without trying some of these solutions.

Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper

One of the worst sensations is settling into a deep sleep, only to be jostled out of it when your partner turns. You might not be able to change their habits, but you can equip your bed with the right accessories to minimize the impact. As Dr. Khaled Abu-Ihweij, a pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist at Hackensack University Medical Center, explained, “Restless sleepers who toss and turn can also cause significant motion transfer, waking their partner.” Our favorite mattress topper is made of memory foam, which is one of the best materials for isolating motion. Plus, it’s infused with graphite, which helps conduct heat away from the body, keeping you both cool all night.

Alternatively, you could try gel-infused memory foam bedding for added benefits. “Foam mattresses and gel mattresses or mattress toppings can help with comfort and regulate temperature,” Dr. Phyllis Zee, the chief of sleep medicine at Northwestern Medicine, said. This gel foam topper is designed to enhance mattresses that feel too firm by adding a layer of plushness, and its open-cell construction helps with ventilation to prevent overheating.

If you sleep with a partner who snores, the fix could be as simple as upgrading their pillow. CNN Underscored associate editor Rachel Dennis interviewed sleep experts about the anti-snoring pillows they recommend, and one of them suggested this one for side sleepers because its contours provide optimal head and neck support. Plus, it’s made with cooling foam.

Perhaps sleeping in separate beds is out of the question for you. Even still, sleeping with separate blankets could prove transformative. Known as the Scandinavian sleep method, the practice can help prevent fighting over your bed covering or even the type of bed covering you use, especially for people with different preferred sleep temperatures. “Linens should be breathable but fall to personal preference: percale versus linen versus bamboo versus poly-blend or other materials,” Dr. Seema Khosla, a spokesperson for the Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), said. “Some materials tend to trap heat while others dissipate heat.” So if your partner is always cold and you’re always hot, let them keep their warm comforter and get yourself a cooling blanket. This one is made of rayon derived from bamboo, and CNN Underscored home and gifts editor Amina Lake Patel loves it for its breathability and easy maintenance.

“For couples, a queen- or king-size mattress is generally recommended to provide adequate personal space,” Abu-Ihweij said. Patel said getting a king-size mattress was the best thing she and her husband did for their sleep, noting, “It felt like we were always on top of each other with our old queen-size mattress, so we can never go back.” As for mattress firmness, Abu-Ihweij said it’s a matter of personal preference, though a medium-firm mattress is usually the safest choice for most people. The Helix Midnight Luxe is one of the best mattresses we’ve tested, and it just so happens to meet both criteria. Our testers even described it as a great option for people whose partners toss and turn thanks to its “solid motion isolation.”

Maybe you and your partner can’t agree on a preferred firmness level. “Most people do not need a specialized mattress; however, some people need different types of mattresses, especially if you have a medical condition, [like] back or neck pain,” Dr. Alcibiades J. Rodriguez, the medical director of the NYU Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center—Sleep Center, said. “If this is a big issue, get those beds where you can adjust the firmness on each side or a queen or king bed.” Our favorite affordable mattress just so happens to come with a remote that lets you adjust the firmness on each side.

This temperature-adjusting mattress cover is, indeed, very expensive, but CNN Underscored health and fitness editor Summer Cartwright called it a game changer for her and her fiancé, as it automatically heats up or cools down on each side based on which phase of sleep they’re in. “My fiancé likes to sleep in tundra-like temperatures while I prefer a much more sane 70-degree atmosphere,” she said. “His side is frigid while mine is perfect.”

Yes, even your bed frame can affect how well you sleep. “[I’m] a sleeper who tosses and turns with a tall mattress, and traditional bed frames with legs make it 10 times worse and disrupt my partner with every movement,” our photo editor Molly Flores said. She described this frame as the best investment she’s made for her and her partner’s sleep thanks to its heavy base, which properly supports their weighty mattress. The frame even has a removable slipcover so that the couple, who are often joined in bed by their dog, can machine-wash it.

“If it were up to my husband, we’d have blackout curtains in our bedroom,” Patel said. “But I love nothing more than waking up to the sun rising, so we use sheer window treatments and have automated smart lights to make sure there’s tons of light in the morning.” As a compromise. Patel’s husband wears this sleep mask, which she said gives him the total blackout he wants. “He loves that it’s super soft and has adjustable eye cups, which means it also doesn’t smush his eyes,” she said.

Earlier this year, CNN Underscored crowned this newer version of Shark’s TurboBlade fan, which doubles as a space heater, a winner of our Inaugural Innovation Awards. A big reason it won is because its adjustable two-blade design is perfect for couples. Both the original version and the newer TurboBlade let you position the blades horizontally and adjust their angle upwards or downwards. So, if your partner enjoys getting pummeled by direct cold airflow at night but you don’t, you can each get what you want.

For people who sleep with snorers, Rodriguez recommends army-style earplugs. These are, according to some Amazon reviewers, much better at creating a seal and blocking out noise than standard earplugs. Their long design might make it difficult to lie down properly if you’re a side sleeper, though, in which case you might instead opt to try our favorite sleep earplugs.

If you want to drown out your partner’s noise but can’t fall asleep to silence, try sleep headphones, which Khosla recommends if earplugs or a sound machine just aren’t cutting it. We tested seven pairs and ultimately liked this pair the most. In addition to canceling out noise, the headphones have a comfortable, sleep-friendly design and a wide variety of cozy sounds to drift off to, from rainy streets to white noise. What’s more, the headphones offer up to 10 hours of continuous battery life.

“White noise machines can be very effective at masking snoring and other disruptive sounds,” Abu-Ihweij said. “The consistent sound they produce can help create a more peaceful sleep environment.” The great news is, you don’t have to drop a ton of cash on a fancy sound machine to get this benefit; this audiologist-recommended model retails for only $25 and offers six different sounds, including white noise. It’s also super compact, so you and your partner can achieve quality sleep at hotels too.

Some of the few times I’ve felt true panic in my life entailed being awoken by someone else’s alarm long before my own was set to go off. If your partner wakes up earlier than you and their phone or alarm clock needlessly disturbs your sleep, you could both probably benefit from a vibrating alarm on your wrist. “My wife and I both rely on an Apple Watch to wake up each morning in place of traditional alarm clocks,” our senior deals editor Rikka Altland said. “I typically get up before her, so being able to have my smartwatch vibrate to kickstart my day instead of relying on typical alarm noises ensures that my wake-up time won’t also be her wake-up time.”

How to sleep in bed with a partner

Even if you and your partner sleep together, you can maintain some separation and, in turn, promote comfort for each of you by getting the right bedding and sleep accessories. “Often, creating an ideal sleep environment includes a conversation with your partner to discuss preferences — light, temperature, linens,” Khosla said. Each of these preferences, as well as noise preferences, can be honored with the right products, be they sleep masks, an adjustable mattress or a white noise machine. There are other simple fixes Khosla outlined that don’t necessarily require buying anything, such as putting tape or sticky notes over charger lights to eliminate all lighting in the room or creating a wind-down routine using your smart home assistant.

Above all, communication and consideration for each other’s needs are just as important in your sleep routines as they are in every other facet of your relationship. “Try to avoid going to bed fighting, and try to adjust to each other’s schedules,” Rodriguez said. “Compromise is important with sleep as it is with everything.”

Finally, if it seems like you or your partner just can’t get comfortable in bed no matter how many changes you make, that could be indicative of a sleep disorder. “One partner’s snoring can significantly disrupt the other’s sleep, and it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health issue like sleep apnea,” Abu-Ihweij said. If you suspect this might be the case, it’s important to get tested for the condition by a medical professional.

FAQs

The best mattress size for sleeping in a bed with a partner is a queen or king size, according to Rodriguez, though to play it safe, you’re likely better off going with the larger option. As Patel noted, upgrading to the largest mattress size your bedroom can accommodate can be life-changing when it comes to achieving optimal sleep health.

As Abu-Ihweij explained, a white noise machine can help with sharing a bed with a partner by masking snoring and other sounds. In other words, the consistent sound of white noise could lull you to sleep while making inconsistent, obtrusive sounds less disruptive.

All of the sleep experts I talked to said using separate blankets for sleeping can be helpful if your partner moves a lot, if one of you tends to hog the blanket or if you have different preferred sleep temperatures. “It eliminates the ‘blanket hog’ issue and allows each person to choose a comforter with their desired weight and warmth,” Abu-Ihweij added. “This can lead to less sleep disruption and a more comfortable night for both partners.” But if motion and temperature aren’t issues for you, you’re probably fine sharing a comforter.
