Dr. Ehsan Jazini, a board-certified spine surgeon at VSI, said back braces provide physical support to stabilize the spine and limit excessive movements when we bend, twist or extend the back. The external support provided by braces not only helps mitigate symptoms of pain but prevents further strain on the muscles, allowing the body to heal more efficiently.

What to look for in a back brace for lower back pain

If you’re trying to manage lower back pain, you’re not alone. A 2025 study estimates that there are more than 450 million cases of lower back pain globally among individuals aged from 15 to 64. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites lower back pain as the single leading cause of disability worldwide, and it estimates that most people will experience lower back pain at least once during their lifetime.

General lower back pain stems from several conditions, such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, disc herniations and arthritis, according to Jazini. Durrenberger added that muscle or ligament strains, generally caused by overuse or poor movement patterns, might also lead to increased lower back pain. It’s also not uncommon to experience more lower back pain as we age, since the discs between the spinal vertebrae can wear down and become injured over time.

Back braces alleviate lower back pain by increasing intra-abdominal pressure, which helps reduce weight load on the discs, ligaments, muscles and tendons in the lumbar region, according to Nandkeshwa. These braces also reinforce good posture by gently adjusting muscles into proper alignment. Before you head out to shop for a back brace for lower back pain, though, there are a few things the experts I consulted said you’ll need to be aware of:

Know what kind of support you need

Back braces come in varying levels of support, and the type of support you need will depend on the specific condition you’re looking to treat. For the lower back, Jazini said to look for lumbar-specific braces, which will provide gentle compression and extra stability for those with chronic pain or herniated discs. Braces labeled as “soft” or “flexible” tend to provide more moderate support suitable for addressing minor strains and mild pain, and for daily wear. Rigid or semirigid braces will deliver the maximum level of support, but Durrenberger said these are typically prescribed by a physician since they’re usually only required for those in postoperative recovery or with severe spinal instability.

To ensure you get a back brace that properly suits your needs, Jazini recommends consulting with a spine specialist. He noted that back braces are not a long-term solution but rather a short-term support tool. “They don’t address the underlying cause of pain, and relying on them too often can weaken core and back muscles that are essential for spinal stability, potentially worsening symptoms over time,” Jazini said.

If using a back brace is necessary to make it through your daily activities pain-free, Jazini said that’s a red flag and you should seek help from a medical professional. Additionally, if your lower back pain lasts more than three to five days, begins to worsen or starts to spread into the legs, Jazini said these are serious signs you should seek help from a spine specialist rather than trying to self-manage your symptoms.

Check for a secure fit

Jazini said a lower back brace should fit tightly and securely, and should not cause any additional pain, numbness or tingling. To ensure the brace doesn’t slip down your hips, you want it to have a snug fit that hugs your waist, according to Nandkeshwar. However, it shouldn’t be so tight that you struggle to breathe normally. “If the brace is not fitted properly, it will not alleviate your symptoms,” Jazini said. If you do want to wear a brace, he recommends you also work on building strength in the surrounding muscles that stabilize your spine, as this will keep you from becoming overreliant on the brace for full-time support.

Both heat and ice treatments offer temporary relief for lower back pain. “Heat and ice can help manage symptoms,” Jazini said. “Ice for acute inflammation or flare-ups, and heat for muscle stiffness.” He added that these treatments are especially effective when used as part of a diagnosis-driven plan created with a healthcare professional.

Supporting the spine and hips is crucial for reducing lower back pain while you sleep. Durrenberger said a medium-firm mattress is generally a good starting point for those looking to bolster support to these areas. If you’re not ready to splurge on a new mattress just yet, Durrenberger said a mattress topper can be a more cost-effective way to add extra support. You could also try placing a pillow under the knees (for back sleepers) or between the knees (for side sleepers), both of which Durrenberger said can help improve spinal alignment.

Massages can provide some relief for those with lower back pain, as they help reduce overall muscle tension. However, Jazini said massages don’t address pain caused by structural spine issues, like herniated discs and spondylolisthesis.

Nandkeshwar recommends wearing a back brace for up to eight hours a day during the initial days following a back injury (also called the acute phase of injury). After a few days, he said you can drop down to wearing the brace for up to four hours per day. Back braces can be worn for daily tasks to help keep the back supported and in proper alignment as well: wear them when exercising, doing yard work or when lifting heavy objects. However, back braces should not be worn when sleeping, according to Jazini.

Durrenberger said it’s important to gradually wean yourself off the brace as your pain decreases so your body can learn to support itself. “Back braces are okay for acute pain, but if you are required to wear one for more than three days, you should seek help from a spine specialist,” Jazini said.

If your lower back pain continues, Jazini said one of the most effective next steps is to see a spine-specialized physical therapist. He said these professionals can help identify movement patterns, muscle imbalances and mechanical issues that might be contributing to your lower back pain. Durrenberger said you should seek more immediate medical attention if your back pain follows a significant accident, lasts longer than two weeks or is accompanied by fever, unexplained illness or numbness and tingling radiating down the legs.
