They worry about how changes to their bodies or eating habits might affect their children.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Caitlin, a mother in Los Angeles, was hesitant to start taking a GLP-1 for an autoimmune condition because she did not want to co-sign the thin ideal used in weight-loss drug marketing. She requested we not use her real name out of privacy concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI was concerned about bringing diet culture into my home. I don\u2019t want to accidentally teach my daughter that being smaller equals being better or more valuable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Some popular advice suggests parents on appetite-suppressing medication simply not talk about it or offer vague statements about taking care of their health. While this is well-meaning guidance, it could be harmful to growing children who conclude eating tiny portions or skipping meals is something to emulate \u2014 behaviors that could contribute to eating disorders.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cKids are going to make up their own ideas of what\u2019s happening if we\u2019re not actually addressing it,\u201d said Nicole Cruz, a registered dietitian in Southern California who specializes in family nutrition. \u201cThey\u2019re absorbing it, they\u2019re seeing it, they\u2019re seeing a shrinking body, they\u2019re seeing you eat less.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person injects themself with a GLP-1 drug.\" class=\"wp-image-9964\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/d4844e97406108f6f49a7e95e57ad63f.jpg\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>A person injects themself with a GLP-1 drug.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Tatsiana Volkava\/Moment RF\/Getty Images<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>What older adults need to know before taking a GLP-1 medication to lose weight<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>11  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Secrecy around taking a GLP-1 can also contribute to shame and stigma about medication. \u201cAllow it to be speakable,\u201d advised Zo\u00eb Bisbing, a body image therapist in New York City. \u201cIf your child asks you, or they find syringes in the fridge, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh yeah, that\u2019s the medicine I\u2019m taking. Do you want to hear why I take it?\u2019 I think it\u2019s OK to talk about it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Jessie Spence, a therapist in Greensboro, North Carolina, who uses they\/their pronouns, was initially concerned that taking a GLP-1 for blood sugar management might be betraying their \u201cfat-friendly roots\u201d and conflict with their body-affirming values in both their parenting and weight-inclusive practice with clients. They decided to be open with their child about taking a GLP-1.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI have just been really straightforward; this is medication for diabetes,\u201d Spence said. \u201cI wanted to be really intentional about not hiding it. Initially, I did lose weight, and then over a year or so, I gained it all back, because my body likes to be where it is.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Half of parents taking weight-loss drugs are already talking openly with their children about the medication, according to an April study.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But for those who want to protect their kids\u2019 body image and relationship with food, it\u2019s important to approach these conversations carefully. Many adults who struggle with food or body image blame the role models who were dieting during their childhood. To avoid perpetuating that cycle, parents on GLP-1s \u2014 for any reason \u2014 can be mindful about the way they talk about food and weight with their children.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Even though weight loss isn\u2019t her goal, Caitlin has been thoughtful about how she talks about the medication and its effects.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            She has explained to her daughter, \u201c\u2018I\u2019m doing this so that I\u2019m in less pain. And because I\u2019m doing this, it\u2019s had some impact on what I\u2019m supposed to eat.\u2019 But I really framed it as the truth of it, which is that I am eating more protein because I am on this medication, not \u2018I\u2019m trying to get shredded\u2019 or \u2018I\u2019m trying to change what I look like.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        How to talk about GLP-1s\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            For families who want to keep things neutral, Bisbing suggested making a matter-of-fact statement: \u201cI take medicines for lots of different reasons. This one happens to have a weight-loss side effect. Some medicines have weight-gain side effects.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Even if you are using the medication primarily for losing weight, there are things you can do to help mitigate the potential risk to your child\u2019s body image or relationship with food. Nikki Naab-Levy, a strength and nutrition coach based in Tacoma, Washington, who takes a GLP-1 for a chronic condition, urged parents to avoid demonizing foods or bodies.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIf they offer you a bite of their ice cream sandwich, and if you\u2019re like, \u2018Thank you,\u2019 and you take a bite, that\u2019s going to have a very different impact than if you say something like, \u2018Oh, no, Mommy can\u2019t have that\u2019 and then comment on your body size.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      streaming now\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CL_MegTirrell_April_2026_Thumbnail.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-4502\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1c421dbdab83f81570b3beb6ed8f885b.jpg\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>Why GLP-1s may or may not be for you<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Bisbing acknowledged parents can feel strongly that \u201ctaking this medicine to lose weight helps them feel healthier and happier, and that\u2019s fine. But that\u2019s complicated for kids because there are a lot of ways to be healthier and happier that don\u2019t involve trying to lose weight.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            She recommended that parents on a GLP-1 for weight loss still try to emphasize their health-promoting behaviors, such as getting enough sleep and physical activity, rather than a number on the scale. \u201cI don\u2019t want to lie to kids or deny anything, but rather to expand the conversation so there\u2019s an \u2018and\u2019 here rather than just \u2018weight loss equals I feel good,\u2019 that there\u2019s more going on here, and maybe more importantly, there\u2019s more that I value than just being smaller.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9948\">While loudly stoking fear of communism, Trump is quietly changing US capitalism<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            When Naab-Levy\u2019s toddler daughter is a little older, she plans to talk with her about GLP-1s in terms of the way health is very individual and doesn\u2019t look the same for everyone. \u201cI actually think that\u2019s a really important concept for kids to understand, when we look at things from an inclusivity standpoint. Some of us have medical challenges, and in some cases, medication can really improve our quality of life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Model balanced nutrition to your kids\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            On a practical level, parents taking these medications can make an effort to model eating regularly and enjoying a variety of foods, \u201cnot eliminating food groups, still trying to eat multiple times throughout the day, and eating meals with your child whenever possible,\u201d Cruz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Caitlin, who prioritizes feeding her family \u201cnutritiously and deliciously,\u201d noted, \u201cI\u2019m still eating a varied plate with lots of different things on it. I\u2019m still getting seconds if I want seconds. I love gummies; I\u2019m still eating gummies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Those with very low appetite may want to discuss their dosage with their doctor. And in the meantime, if you know you\u2019ll be having a meal with your child, Cruz invited parents to consider trying to \u201cplan, if possible, to be a bit hungrier for that meal so you can eat a more normalized amount.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Naab-Levy encouraged parents to do their best to protect kids from witnessing or overhearing overt restriction like calorie-counting that a child might try to emulate: \u201cIf you are someone who\u2019s tracking your food more closely or exhibiting other dieting behaviors, try to do them in a way that isn\u2019t directly in front of your children.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cSo don\u2019t use a food scale around your children. And one of my rules is that any type of diet talk or weight-loss talk is really an adult conversation; even with friends, we\u2019re not doing that in front of our kids.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Kids need a lot of food to grow\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            When a parent has reduced hunger cues, Cruz noted that \u201cwhat a \u2018normal\u2019 meal looks like can start getting a bit skewed,\u201d which can affect the way parents respond to their children\u2019s appetite.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOur kids are growing, and they\u2019re developing, and they actually need a lot of calories, a lot of fuel, a lot of energy to feed not only their daily activity levels but their growing and developing body,\u201d Cruz added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Ensuring kids have adequate access to food is important \u201cespecially in diet culture, where we\u2019re constantly being told that our portions are too big and that we should be eating less, less calories, lower fat, lower carb, lower everything, we really want to be focusing on getting our kids enough,\u201d Cruz said.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Handling compliments about weight loss\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The pressure to be thinner is reinforced when someone loses weight, whether from a GLP-1 or any other reason. \u201cWe get a lot of external approval,\u201d Naab-Levy noted. \u201cWe get told, \u2018You look so great.\u2019 People are quite literally nicer to you.\u201d It\u2019s essential that parents stay attuned to what their kids might be absorbing from these interactions.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Caitlin hopes she doesn\u2019t have to face compliments from family members but said she would try to deflect those kinds of unsolicited comments about her body.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI haven\u2019t lost enough weight that I need any new clothes at this point, but should I need new clothes, it\u2019s not something I\u2019m going to be celebrating. It\u2019s just that everybody deserves to have clothes that fit,\u201d Caitlin said. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to feel good about how you look, but is that where you want your child deriving their strongest sense of self-worth? But it does mean making an extra effort to pay attention to the way you talk about your experience and how your kids are reacting.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOne of my core beliefs is you have the right to full body autonomy, and if this medicine feels like it\u2019s right for you, you should feel free to pursue it. And another core belief is you also have a responsibility to the environmental safety for your kids.
