Voters must decide which one is real<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            The answer could provide insights into some of the most complex and severe mental health conditions, including schizoaffective disorder and borderline personality disorder.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            About  develops schizoaffective disorder during their life. The condition is marked by schizophrenia symptoms like delusions and hallucinations as well as depression and mania. In the US, some 14 million people have borderline personality disorder, which involves patterns of unstable, intense emotions, impulsive behaviors, self-mutilation and an unhealthy view of oneself.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThis is the sort of experience that most people don\u2019t ever see but need to know about and care about \u2014 and put the appropriate level of care and science and societal support behind,\u201d Deisseroth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Finding what causes these conditions is the mission of Deisseroth and his team as they combine cutting-edge neuroscience with a state-of-the-art laboratory in an inpatient hospital setting called the Human Neural Circuitry program.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shuji Nakamura earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for his breakthrough invention with blue LEDs. His ultimate goal is to decode \u201cthe inner world of human beings as it is experienced in health and disease.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThat scientific discovery aspect is very exciting and motivating,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cAlthough I treat patients and do clinical research, I\u2019m really a basic scientist at heart. That\u2019s what drew me to neuroscience and the study of the brain: How can cells give rise to an emotion? How can they create one version of reality that may be different from another brain\u2019s version of reality?\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWe\u2019re approaching this from a basic curiosity standpoint as well as treatment standpoint,\u201d Deisseroth added.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Research results at warp speed\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The program began three years ago in what Stanford hails as a unique collaboration of biomedical scientists, data scientists, neurosurgeons, neurologists and psychiatrists \u2014 with the main research being conducted inside Stanford Hospital on the same floor as the hospital\u2019s epilepsy monitoring unit.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            During testing in one mode, patients wear a shower-cap-like array of electrodes for noninvasive recording of brain activity. Other times, patients have deep brain recording electrodes that are placed and removed by neurosurgeons. In both cases, real-time electrical activity from the brain is collected and transmitted via fiber optics and copper wires.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<video>\n<\/video>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>A volunteer wearing a cap full of sensors, which pick up tiny voltage changes from active neurons near the scalp, undergoes testing in the lab.<\/span>\n<figcaption>Nigel Walker\/Stanford Health Care<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            These are \u201cvery large data streams, spanning the brain and with sub-millisecond resolution,\u201d Deisseroth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The data streams can communicate with servers across the Stanford campus with a \u201cround-trip time of less than half a millisecond, allowing closed-loop work for sensing and responding.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The responses, he said, are tracked as \u201cpeople carry out activities such as interacting socially, listening to stories, describing sensory responses and describing internal feelings \u2014 sometimes in the context of different medications \u2014 and all in a naturalistic, comfortable, safe and private setting.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe key innovation here is, we get results with millisecond precision,\u201d Deisseroth said. \u201cExactly as problems are happening, we\u2019re literally seeing what\u2019s going on in the brain at the millisecond level \u2014 and that\u2019s the crucial step.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The tests go beyond schizoaffective disorder and borderline personality disorder. Investigators are also studying autism, cancer-induced depression, epilepsy, chronic pain, dissociative disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other brain-related conditions.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The research is conducted with the full consent of patients; almost every patient has expressed a deep curiosity about what is happening inside their brains, Deisseroth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The Human Neural Circuitry program is already paying dividends. In a study published in the journal Science in May 2025, researchers found that humans and mice share persistent brain-activity patterns in response to a mildly adverse sensory experience (in this case, an eye puff test like what you go through at the eye doctor).\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<video>\n<\/video>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Deisseroth explains his research, saying, \u201cWe were interested in where the signals in the brain start, how they propagate, and how that relates to what the person is experiencing.\u201d<\/span>\n<figcaption>Nigel Walker\/Stanford Health Care<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cWe were interested in where the signals in the brain start, how they propagate and how that relates to what the person is experiencing at that exact moment,\u201d Deisseroth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The investigators identified triggering activity inside the brain that provided \u201cdeep insight into the origination of these neural activity patterns that relate to negative emotions.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9924\">Blanche declines to pledge independence from the White House<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt was a wonderful first step,\u201d he said. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t have done this without the setup of the Human Neural Circuitry program.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        The moment that changed his life\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Three decades ago, Deisseroth\u2019s life changed in an instant. He was a budding neurosurgeon late in his residency at Stanford Medicine. At 27, Deisseroth had \u201cstructured my whole career\u201d around becoming a neurosurgeon, but life had other plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            During a required psychiatry phase of his residency, he was stationed in a locked psychiatric ward, taking notes at a nurse\u2019s station when a patient undergoing a full-blown schizoaffective episode approached him, screaming.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI remember just sitting there in the chair looking up at him and just seeing his mix of fear and anger,\u201d Deisseroth said. \u201cHe was yelling at me. Even with all of the major medical advances in recent decades, he said, the human brain remains the least understood organ.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cFor every other organ, we at least have a pretty good mechanistic model for what\u2019s going on. The heart is clearly pumping blood. We can model the heart as a pump,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the brain, we don\u2019t quite understand exactly at that level what it\u2019s trying to do, so it\u2019s much harder to fix.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<video>\n<\/video>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>A volunteer is fitted with a cap that has small metal disc electrodes that will register  signals through the scalp and skin.<\/span>\n<figcaption>Nigel Walker\/Stanford Health Care<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            But, he said, it\u2019s not impossible \u2014 and that is why the Human Neural Circuitry program is so \u201cexciting.\u201d He ponders deep questions daily:\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span>\n            What if treatments can be developed for specific neural circuit activity during a breakdown as it happens?\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            What if a severe autistic storm can be put out almost as quickly as it starts?\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            What if cancer-induced depression can become a thing of the past through research developed out of his Stanford lab?\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no limit to the disorders that we can study under these conditions and come to a deep understanding of what\u2019s actually going on all across the brain during these very complex and hitherto quite private symptoms,\u201d Deisseroth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He added, \u201cThe goal is to have, for the first time, treatments that relate to that neural circuitry dynamics as it happens in the moment.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9922\">States set school vaccine requirements.
