{"id":9359,"date":"2026-08-12T10:37:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T10:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9359"},"modified":"2026-08-12T10:37:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T10:37:11","slug":"wisconsin-weighs-a-democratic-socialist-governor-and-other-key-races-to-watch-in-tuesdays-primaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9359","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin weighs a democratic socialist governor and other key races to watch in Tuesday\u2019s primaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n            The next battles over the Democratic Party\u2019s ideological direction come Tuesday in a slate of primaries that includes showdowns in two upper Midwestern political battlegrounds.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9347\">How Trump turned Homeland Security into an engine of his voter fraud crusade<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Francesca Hong, a 37-year-old democratic socialist state legislator and former chef and restaurant owner, is widely favored to win her party\u2019s nomination in the Wisconsin governor\u2019s race \u2014 setting up a high-stakes test of how a swing state electorate might react to the party\u2019s shift leftward this fall, as the 2028 Democratic presidential primary looms.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI am tired of people telling us when we get to have change, how much change we get to have,\u201d Hong told supporters Monday. \u201cThat incrementalism is irresponsible. We deserve so much better. You deserve so much better and together we are going to make better possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s one of several key races that could affect the political landscape in November, when Democrats need wins up and down the ballot in the upper Midwest and elsewhere as they seek to win House and Senate majorities.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n<span>EDITOR\u2019S NOTE:<\/span>\u00a0  Join John King at CNN\u2019s Magic Wall as he breaks down primary election results and takes your questions live on Tuesday night, starting at 8:50 pm ET.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            The week after Michigan voters narrowly chose the more progressive candidate in a Senate primary, voters in Minnesota will face a similar choice in their state\u2019s Senate primary. A southwestern Wisconsin congressional primary features a similar ideological split. And in Connecticut, the Democratic divide is less over ideology than the question of whether the party needs generational change.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Republicans, meanwhile, will be closely watching South Carolina, where a special Senate primary is the latest test of whether GOP voters remain in lockstep with President Donald Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Here are some of the key primaries to watch Tuesday:\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Will Wisconsin Democrats pick a democratic socialist for governor?\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Democratic Gov. Tony Evers\u2019 decision not to seek a third term has paved the way for one of the party\u2019s most chaotic primaries this year. As Hong surged, moderates flailed, failing to rally around an alternative. Both of Evers\u2019 lieutenant governors \u2014 Mandela Barnes, who held the role in his first term, and Sara Rodriguez, who is in office now \u2014 dropped out of the race in July.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, dropped out of the race in early July. But after Rodriguez\u2019s exit amid a campaign finance scandal, he reentered 10 days later, this time with Evers\u2019 backing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Awaiting the winner in November is Rep. Huh\/AP<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            One question looming over the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary\u2019s final stretch has been whether Hong \u2014 who has appeared frequently in television interviews across outlets of all political persuasions \u2014 is ready for more intense scrutiny.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            With some Democrats already concerned about her support for left-wing issues like defunding the police, she\u2019s faced fresh backlash in recent days over a meandering answer last week in a CNN interview when asked about a 2020 tweet in which she advocated for canceling Thanksgiving because the holiday is \u201ccelebrating colonialism.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Tracy Lewis of Madison said she feared the dustup over Thanksgiving will haunt Hong for the duration of the campaign if she wins the primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI just feel sometimes like she\u2019s not ready for prime time,\u201d said Lewis, who is supporting Crowley after other candidates left the race. \u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous. I don\u2019t know what she was thinking about that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Karen Neff said she couldn\u2019t believe when she heard about Hong\u2019s back-and-forth on Thanksgiving.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt\u2019s dumb for that to be out there. We all love Thanksgiving,\u201d Neff said. \u201cEverybody goes home for Thanksgiving. When are you going to fight with your family if you don\u2019t have Thanksgiving?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Asked about the Thanksgiving comment that she has since walked back, Hong told CNN: \u201cI had some bad takes and some hot takes on Twitter, but like all everyday Wisconsinites, I had to express my frustrations that the system wasn\u2019t working for us.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        How early voting could hurt Crowley\u2019s chances\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The turbulent last month of the gubernatorial primary, which saw Barnes and Rodriguez drop out and Crowley reactive his campaign, may leave some Democratic voters who cast their ballot early in Wisconsin out of luck.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI already voted absentee, but now we move on,\u201d said Mike Connell, a Democratic voter from Madison who came to see Crowley as he stopped by the Majestic Theatre on a final push before Tuesday\u2019s primary.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Voters arrive at a polling place in Milwaukee, Tuesday, July 28.\" class=\"wp-image-9355\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b65f3b2cfee3be1db23416ccbf897689.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b65f3b2cfee3be1db23416ccbf897689.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b65f3b2cfee3be1db23416ccbf897689-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Voters arrive at a polling place in Milwaukee, Tuesday, July 28.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Nam Y. Huh\/AP<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Tens of thousands of Wisconsin voters cast early ballots before the field was set, officials said, creating a scenario for which there is no recourse.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOnce an absentee ballot has been returned to the municipal clerk, it cannot be spoiled and reissued for any reason,\u201d the Wisconsin Elections Commissions explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            A longtime adviser to Wisconsin Democrats said the early voting dilemma could have real consequences for Crowley\u2019s attempt to catch up with Hong\u2019s momentum, telling CNN: \u201cIt could be an entirely different race, without the early votes that were already in.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=9333\">The little-noticed Supreme Court case that could impact where people pray<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\n        Setting stage for key Minnesota races\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, stunned the political world when he announced he would not seek reelection.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But there\u2019s little drama in who Democrats will nominate to succeed him: Sen. Amy Klobuchar is all but certain to win the primary. She\u2019ll take on whoever emerges from a nine-candidate Republican field that includes prominent 2020 election denier Mike Lindell, the pillow pitch man endorsed by Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Minnesota Gov. Tina Smith.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            That Democratic primary pits Rep. Angie Craig against Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, in another moderate versus progressive showdown. Craig\u2019s roster of supporters includes Buttigieg, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz. Flanagan, meanwhile, is backed by a number of prominent progressives, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Craig and her allies have outraised and outspent Flanagan in the primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            On the Republican side, the field of nine contenders includes former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya, former NBA player Royce White and former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze. Tafoya has vastly outraised the other candidates.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Can Trump carry Graham\u2019s sister to victory?\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Trump encouraged South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to tap Lindsey Graham\u2019s sister Darline Graham to fill the late Republican senator\u2019s seat for the remainder of his term after he died last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But Graham was on the ballot this November, and now \u2014 with Trump\u2019s encouragement and endorsement \u2014 his sister is competing Tuesday in a special primary to replace him and seek a full six-year term herself.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman and Russell Fry, as well as former Gov. Mark Sanford and businessman Mark Lynch, who lost the primary to Lindsey Graham earlier this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            If no candidate tops 50%, the top two finishers will advance to an August 25 runoff \u2014 a scenario that seems likely headed into Tuesday\u2019s contest.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The race is the latest test of Trump\u2019s sway over the Republican electorate. He started the year on a roll, steamrolling a handful of Indiana state senators who had defied his redistricting wishes, an intra-party critic in Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and two GOP senators, Louisiana\u2019s Bill Cassidy and Texas\u2019 John Cornyn. Since then, though, candidates he has endorsed have faltered in several races \u2014 including South Carolina\u2019s gubernatorial primary, where Trump\u2019s initial pick, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, lost to state Attorney General Alan Wilson.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Generational change in Connecticut?\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Rep. So has VoteVets, which said it spent nearly $1 million in advertising for Bronin.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Though Bronin is expected to be Larson\u2019s strongest challenger, there are two other Democrats in the primary: Hartford school board member Ruth Fortune and state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        An ideologically divided Driftless Area\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Wisconsin\u2019s 3rd District features another moderate-versus-progressive Democratic match-up, with the party\u2019s voters choosing a nominee to take on Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden in what could be the state\u2019s most competitive House race.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Rebecca Cooke, a moderate who came less than three percentage points from unseating Van Orden in what\u2019s likely to have been a less politically favorable year for Democrats in 2024, faces progressive Emily Berge, the former Eau Claire city council president.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Cooke, who has broad Democratic establishment backing, has distanced herself from left-leaning policies like defunding the police and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Berge advocates for Medicare for All, which Cooke suggested may be politically improbable and says a Democratic House majority would be more likely to focus on more achievable aims like extending Affordable Care Act tax credits.
