How to handle them<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            In the crucial final weeks\u202fbefore the\u202fmidterms,\u202fSpeaker Mike\u202fJohnson and his GOP campaign arm\u202fhave\u202fsought\u202fto defuse\u202fmounting political crises\u202fengulfing\u202fthe reelection\u202fbids of\u202fRep. Max Miller\u202fin\u202fthe\u202fsuburbs of Cleveland\u202fas well as Rep. Chuck\u202fEdwards in western North\u202fCarolina\u202fwith\u202fmixed results. On Wednesday morning, Edwards announced he would no longer seek re-election after the House Ethics Committee recommended a censure for him and found he acted inappropriately toward two female staffers in his office. Democrats are still hopeful about the North Carolina seat given the short runway for a brand-new candidate to contest their own nominee, according to multiple sources.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Miller, meanwhile, has defiantly pledged to stay in the race despite concerns from top GOP officials and the president that he may not be able to win in a district Trump won by more than 10 points.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            All of this on top of their\u202fexisting problem\u202fin central Florida\u202fwith embattled Rep.\u202fCory Mills who is still facing a wide-ranging ethics committee probe.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Republican leaders, including Johnson, have\u202fso far\u202favoided publicly pressuring Miller to step aside. In an interview with Politico Tuesday, Johnson argued the ethics panel investigation into Miller needed to take its course.\u202f\u202fBut privately, key Republicans have raced to\u202fcontain\u202fdamages where they can and have anxiously watched Miller\u2019s effort to publicly defend himself, which they believe is imperiling his re-election even further.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            One GOP strategist watching Miller\u2019s interview with CNN anchor Jake Tapper Tuesday afternoon texted, \u201cI mean what the absolute f*** was that.\u201d Another GOP aide on the Hill texted, \u201cI had a feeling this wouldn\u2019t go well for him, but it\u2019s actually much worse than bad. epic disaster.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Behind the scenes, party leaders worked to convince Edwards he couldn\u2019t win \u2013 and privately, party insiders are hoping Mills loses in a primary battle later this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            So far,\u202fthe\u202fHouse GOP\u2019s main campaign groups\u202fhaven\u2019t\u202freserved any airtime to back up any of the incumbents\u202fthrough November, according to\u202fAdImpact\u202fdata.\u202fBut soon, as Democratic spending grows, Johnson and his team will\u202fhave to decide\u202fwhether to\u202fsend critical cavalry to their embattled incumbents\u202ffor the sake of\u202ftheir\u202fmajority\u202f\u2013 even if it\u202fcould\u202fmean\u202ftarnishing their own\u202fparty\u2019s broader brand.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Democrats, meanwhile, are plotting how to maximize the pain, according to multiple people familiar with internal discussions. While some of their members\u202fare eager\u202fto\u202fquickly\u202fforce votes to expel Miller from the House, leadership\u202fprefers\u202fto\u202fbeat him\u202fin November \u2013 rather than helping Republicans\u202fsolve their candidate problems.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Neither of the seats would be easy wins for Democrats. Trump won by double digits in both the Ohio and Florida districts.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Yet Democrats insist they have a serious chance of flipping them if Miller stays in and Mills wins his primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThese are members who don\u2019t care about representing their\u202fcommunities,\u202fthey have poor temperament, bad judgment and it really calls into questions if they are fit to serve at all,\u201d Rep. Suzan DelBene, who leads the House Democrats\u2019 campaign\u202farm,\u202f\u202fsaid\u202fin a recent interview before Edwards exited the race.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Miller\u202fremains defiant\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Republicans started out the week with a rapidly\u202fescalating\u202fcrisis in Ohio, as\u202fMiller\u202f\u2014\u202fa\u202flong-time Trump loyalist\u202f\u2014\u202fsought to clear his name by broadcasting live on X Sunday, bringing more attention to\u202fallegations\u202fthat\u202fhe abused his ex-wife Emily Moreno, the daughter of\u202fSen. Bernie Moreno.\u202fWhile Miller has denied the allegation, the messy\u202ffamily dispute has\u202f drawn attention from the\u202fpresident himself.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Trump privately does not believe that Miller can win the race given the accusations,\u202fthough he did not tell Miller directly to withdraw his name when the two spoke on Monday, CNN has reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Some other Republicans \u2014 including Sen. Moreno \u2014 have called publicly for Miller to exit the race.\u202fThe House Ethics Committee also said\u202fTuesday it would\u202finvestigate\u202fMiller,\u202fa\u202fstep the\u202fcongressman\u202fhad called for, saying it would be a chance to clear his name.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Rep. Are you going to drop out of this race? Are you going to resign? Are you going to get out before the deadline? And my answer to you, Jake, is no,\u201d Miller said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And he\u202fclaimed\u202fthat GOP leaders were backing his reelection fight: \u201cSpeaker Mike Johnson is standing behind me \u2026 No one has told me to get off the ballot. I am innocent of all of the allegations that have been attributed to me. I have done well representing my constituent\u2019s interests. Why would I drop out?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Miller\u2019s\u202fDemocratic opponent,\u202fBrian\u202fPoindexter,\u202fa local council man and union ironworker, has run on a populist record\u202fthat\u2019s\u202fmade him a favorite of both moderate Blue Dogs and the party\u2019s progressive wing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            More recently,\u202fhe\u2019s\u202fmade clear that Miller\u2019s actions\u202fwill be\u202fa\u202ffocus\u202fduring the\u202fcampaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIf all the allegations against Congressman Miller prove to be true, Max Miller should be in jail, not worried about retaining a seat in Congress,\u201d Poindexter said in a statement to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Edwards\u2019 ethics woes\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Just as GOP leaders were privately scrambling to figure out how best to keep Miller\u2019s suburban Cleveland seat,\u202fthey\u202flearned of\u202fa\u202fscathing new ethics report\u202fthat\u202fsaid\u202fEdwards\u202fhad made unwanted advances toward two young women in his office.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Edwards\u2019 campaign disputed the findings\u202fand\u202finsisted\u202fhe\u202f\u201cdid not violate federal sexual harassment law.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"U.S. Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) attends a hearing on the Trump administration's 2027 budget request, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 15, 2026.\" class=\"wp-image-8573\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/31a40cfbc0c7065951f6f14ff2f8a904.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/31a40cfbc0c7065951f6f14ff2f8a904.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/31a40cfbc0c7065951f6f14ff2f8a904-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>U.S. Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) attends a hearing on the Trump administration&#8217;s 2027 budget request, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 15, 2026.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Evelyn Hockstein\/Reuters<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            But within hours,\u202fHouse Republican leaders began privately working to convince Edwards to abandon his reelection bid, CNN\u202freported.\u202fThey feared Edwards put them at risk of losing the seat,\u202fespecially with the full House expected to vote to formally censure him when lawmakers return\u202ffrom their August recess.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Early Wednesday morning, Edwards announced he would not seek reelection, giving party leaders there an opportunity to now choose a replacement candidate to face off against Democrats\u2019 candidateJamie\u202fAger, a farmer whose grandfather served in the US House and statehouse, and has been one of Democrats\u2019 standout recruits of the cycle. Ager has\u202fbeen\u202fa prolific\u202ffundraiser and outraised Edwards nine to one in the most recent quarter.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Ager declined an interview request to talk about Edwards before he dropped out Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Mills at risk in primary\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            A third Republican, Rep. Cory Mills of Florida,\u202fhas\u202fbeen under a long-time\u202fcloud of investigations,\u202fincluding\u202fby\u202fthe House\u202fethics\u202fpanel.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            GOP fears\u202fover his electability\u202fspiked\u202flast year when news broke that Mills was under investigation by DC police for allegedly assaulting an individual. Mills was never arrested\u202fand has denied any wrongdoing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The House Ethics Committee is probing allegations against him, and the panel\u202fannounced in May that it had \u201cauthorized more than 20 subpoenas, collected thousands of documents and contacted dozens of witnesses\u201d as it sought to review allegations\u202fMills\u202f\u201cmay have violated various rules, laws or other standards of conduct.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s\u202fnot yet certain that Mills will be on the ballot, either.\u202fPrivately, some top Republicans are hopeful that Mills\u202fwill lose his GOP primary on August\u202f18,\u202fwhere he faces former local news anchor Ryan\u202fElijah.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rep. Why would I want someone\u202frepresenting\u202fme in Congress who I\u202fcan\u2019t\u202feven talk to my kids about because of the violence against women?\u201d Dalton\u202ftold CNN\u202fin a recent interview<s>.<\/s>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            Mills, for his part,\u202fsaid\u202fhe fully expected his Democratic opponent to hit him on the ethics investigation, saying his district has \u201calways been a key target.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cObviously \u202fthey\u2019re\u202fgoing to always try and\u202futilize\u202fit again. That\u2019s\u202fpolitics\u202fright?\u201d Mills said. He said he expected his\u202fethics\u202finvestigation to conclude \u201cpretty soon\u201d but suggested it may not be the last\u202fheadache. \u201cYou are going to continue to have this political whack a mole.
