\n If I were stranded on a desert island and given the choice to bring only one thing with me, it\u2019d be a very large notebook. A pen too, of course. And maybe some highlighters, a couple rolls of washi tape and a handful of binder clips (you know, for good measure). OK, so maybe it wouldn\u2019t make the most sense to bring an entire stationery store\u2019s worth of supplies to a secluded island, but my point is, I\u2019d want<\/em> to. That\u2019s because, over the past two decades, I\u2019ve discovered the various benefits of journal writing for my mental health, creativity and accomplishment of health and fitness goals.\n <\/p>\n

\n Also as a result of journaling, I\u2019ve been more creative, accomplished more goals and tasks, decreased the frequency of bad habits while increasing the frequency of good ones and experienced elevated moods through the consistent use of mood trackers.\n <\/p>\n

\n If any (or all!) of the above is of interest to you, I have some good news to share: There\u2019s neither a bad time nor a wrong way to start a journaling practice of your own. Whether you want to kick-start a new creative hobby, find a wellness product to improve mental health or desperately need a planning system in order to crush your goals, trust me when I say journaling can help. And no, you don\u2019t have to be an artist to be a journaler; simply grab your favorite pen and notebook, then start experimenting. If you\u2019re not sure how to journal, this guide is chock-full of my favorite products \u2014 ones I\u2019ve been using for more than a decade in addition to ones I\u2019ve recently purchased myself whose overall value also comes backed by stationery experts \u2014 plus tips and guidance to help you move past that first page. \n Notebooks\n<\/h2>\n

\n Your journaling journey should begin with choosing a notebook, journal or planner that suits your individual needs and preferences as much as your personality; with any luck, it\u2019ll become your closest bedside, desktop and travel companion throughout the entire year, maybe longer.\n <\/p>\n

\n When choosing, consider size (pocketable A6 or desk-bound A4?), thickness (one 200-plus-page journal or a series of smaller 80-pagers?), exterior (rough-and-tumble hardcover or pliable softcover?), color (the most trad black or the hottest of pinks, floral patterned or covered in your favorite officially licensed characters?) and page style (dot, grid, plain or lined?).\n <\/p>\n

\n With so many options, it might be worth trying a few until you find the right one for you, then finding uses for the ones that didn\u2019t speak to you, whether as junk journals, receptacles for your \u201cmorning pages\u201d or a dedicated place to scribble down tasks and groceries.\n <\/p>\n

These spiral-ring notebooks from personal-favorite notebook maker Traveler’s Company, a brand also beloved by every expert featured in this guide, became my go-to everyday carry, aka EDC, the day I bought it. Its minimalist aesthetic, top-notch Japanese craftsmanship and versatile (not to mention delectable) MD Paper \u2014 pencils and ballpoints work just as well on it as fountain pens \u2014 make it a stellar option for on-the-go scribbles, sketches and secrets alike. Though I haven’t regularly used a spiral anything since high school (will always and forever LYLAS, though, FranklinCovey), its tear-away pages serve it well as an EDC for easily cleansing your journal of completed to-do and grocery lists while maintaining those pages you want to keep. Designed with fountain pen-friendly, silky-soft paper, Midori notebooks offer a luxurious experience without the luxury price tag (but that said, it’s a better value for fountain pen users and long-form writers than it is for junk journalers or the decor obsessed, who can save money on a notebook with lesser paper.) The notebook\u2019s minimalist design speaks to me, and I love how it lies completely flat so I can avoid the hassle of using binder clips to keep pages from moving.<\/p><\/div>\n

This eye-catcher came highly recommended by both Tyler McCall and Eric Campbell, co-owners of Chicago, Illinois, stationery store Paper & Pencil. The former praised its bright color options and “really nice paper” that doesn’t bleed or feather regardless of writing instrument used, while the latter pointed out how its paper cover makes it “easier to throw in a bag and go with you.” After using the Naked from Mishmash \u2014 a woman-owned company based in Porto, Portugal, that emphasizes locally sourced materials, sustainability and handmade design \u2014 myself, I can attest to its paper surviving everything from the darkest of fountain pen inks to the brightest of gel pens to wettest of rubber stamps. Because it’s difficult to find the brand in the US, you’ll likely pay a hefty shipping fee to order online, but snagging a few \u2014 for yourself and for a few friends and family members \u2014 is ultimately well worth it. <\/p><\/div>\n

This infinitely reusable notebook is a huge sustainability win and my personal favorite eco-conscious notebook, as it\u2019s a much cheaper alternative to paper tablets such as the Kindle Scribe or ReMarkable Paper Pro.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n Pens and pencils\n<\/h2>\n

\n When choosing a pen (or, let\u2019s be honest, pens) for your journal, keep style of pen \u2014 fountain, ballpoint, rollerball, gel \u2014 top of mind before considering other factors such as ink color, \u201chandfeel\u201d and aesthetics. And remember, you can always move pens in and out of rotation whenever you want. (I like to switch up my fountain pens and inks at the start of every month, for example.) I\u2019ve included a wide range of options here, all personally tested and expert recommended.\n <\/p>\n

McCall recommends the Pilot Kakuno because it’s “super approachable,” as far as fountain pens go, and I wholeheartedly agree with him. We both love it for its fun, bright color options and ease of use straight out of the box. “When you buy the pen, it’ll be set up as a cartridge pen,” McCall said, referencing the pen’s included black ink cartridge, “and cartridges are nice because they’re kind of like the easiest, cleanest, neatest way to use a fountain pen. You just pop a cartridge in and get to writing.” And there’s different cartridges available, different colors. Some folks just like keep it a cartridge pen because that feels best to them. But we do sell what’s called a converter. So then you can actually turn your pen into a pen that takes bottled ink.<\/p><\/div>\n

Using the Sharpie Creative Markers \u2014 just added to the brand\u2019s product lineup in February of last year \u2014 for the first time felt close to a religious experience for this stylophile. These markers feel like you\u2019re writing or drawing in paint, and they even dry relatively quickly given how liquidy they are. My Midori Traveler\u2019s Notebook (the best travel journal, in my opinion) got a serious upgrade when I started adding high-quality photo prints to my entries and spreads. I’d consider it relatively simple to use, even for the less tech-savvy out there; pairing your phone to the printer via Bluetooth, making optional photo edits and adjustments using the Kodak Photo Printer app, then sending the photo(s) directly to the portable printer is all there is to it. This bundle includes 38 sheets, which will afford you a little time before having to think about grabbing additional cartridges. But when you do, it’s a good value ($22 for 60 sheets, or $2.70 compared with competing portable printer refills, <\/p><\/div>\n

For a better value, consider this organizer instead. Its securer rods and horizontal design allow you to use every spool while still hung up, and additional nice-to-haves such as its base’s built-in ruler hook for hanging scissors only sweeten the deal.<\/p><\/div>\n
