{"id":7775,"date":"2026-07-29T22:07:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T22:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7775"},"modified":"2026-07-29T22:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T22:07:24","slug":"from-bad-to-worse-for-trump-and-his-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7775","title":{"rendered":"From bad to worse for Trump and his base"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n            Republicans are starting to fret about their base\u2019s lack of enthusiasm ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7769\">Kathy Ruemmler said Epstein accuser\u2019s assertions \u2018lacked inherent credibility\u2019 under questioning about her own ties<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Those voters were already disproportionately less likely to vote in elections not featuring Donald Trump, and now the GOP has to contend with the president being more unpopular than ever.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And a new CNN poll drives home the problem: Large portions of Trump\u2019s base are feeling disillusioned over more than a few of his choices lately.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Across a bevy of questions \u2014 on subjects ranging from the economy to the Iran war to Trump\u2019s self-enrichment and efforts to makeover Washington \u2014 large percentages of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents are registering discontent. As in, often 30%, 40%, 50% or more.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Overall, the CNN poll shows 30% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents disapprove of Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            That number is rather high in and of itself. But it actually might undersell the level of disillusionment on some fronts.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        The big one: the economy\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Without question, the most troubling numbers for Trump and the GOP concern the economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Not only is the economy generally voters\u2019 biggest concern; it also features Trump\u2019s worst numbers.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"People walk outside of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Manhattan on Wednesday in New York City.\" class=\"wp-image-7773\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/10781a5d476edce3656d473458d7024f.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/10781a5d476edce3656d473458d7024f.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/10781a5d476edce3656d473458d7024f-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>People walk outside of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Manhattan on Wednesday in New York City.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Spencer Platt\/Getty Images<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            To wit, among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents in the poll:\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span>\n            64% say high gas prices have caused at least a \u201cmoderate\u201d hardship for them\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            56% say the economy is very or somewhat poor\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            56% say Trump hasn\u2019t gone far enough to reduce the price of everyday goods\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            56% disapprove of Trump\u2019s performance on gas prices\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            51% say Trump doesn\u2019t have a clear plan on gas prices\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            50% say Trump\u2019s policies haven\u2019t improved economic conditions (with 31% saying his policies have actually made things <em>worse<\/em>)\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            47% disapprove of Trump on inflation\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            That\u2019s around half or more of what should be Trump\u2019s own supporters that have a lot of gripes about the economy and his handling of it right now.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Iran\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The numbers are slightly less grim on Iran, but still pretty grim.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Again, among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents:\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span>\n            64% think a long-term war with Iran is likely\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            45% say the toll of the war \u2014 in lives and money \u2014 hasn\u2019t been worth it\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            45% say Trump doesn\u2019t have a clear plan for Iran\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            40% disapprove of Trump overall on Iran\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            39% say his decisions about military action in Iran have hurt the US (versus 44% who say it has helped, with the rest being neutral)\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            And Trump\u2019s trend line on Iran continues to be bad. Trump\u2019s disapproval on Iran among these groups has increased from 30% in March to 40% today.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7767\">Trump targets Dulles Airport for next DC-area construction venture<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\n        His priorities\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The poll also shows many members of Trump\u2019s base simply don\u2019t like what he\u2019s focused on \u2014 including his personal finances and projects like the White House ballroom and Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chipped paint and algae are visible in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, after recent renovations following a directive from President Donald Trump to paint it blue ahead of the 250th anniversary of US independence, in Washington, DC, on June 21.\" class=\"wp-image-7774\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/60003166adb5bd987dc252b026f9f9c3.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/60003166adb5bd987dc252b026f9f9c3.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/60003166adb5bd987dc252b026f9f9c3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Chipped paint and algae are visible in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, after recent renovations following a directive from President Donald Trump to paint it blue ahead of the 250th anniversary of US independence, in Washington, DC, on June 21.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Aaron Schwartz\/Reuters<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Among these groups:\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span>\n            45% say Trump isn\u2019t \u201cin touch with the problems ordinary Americans face in their daily lives\u201d \u2014 up from 34% in January\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            39% say he hasn\u2019t paid enough attention to the country\u2019s most important problems \u2014 up from 25% in January\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            Around 3 in 10 say he\u2019s \u201cgone too far\u201d in changing institutions like the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center (which Trump put his name on before a judge removed it), remodeling the White House and other Washington landmarks and pursuing personal business interests while in the White House\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            30% say Trump doesn\u2019t put the good of the country over his personal gain\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>\n            26% say they\u2019re angry or dissatisfied about the ballroom and the reflecting pool (compared to just 39% who are positive about these projects)\n        <\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            It would be bad enough for Trump if the economy were suboptimal and people didn\u2019t think the things he did were working.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But these numbers \u2014 combined with the majority of Trump\u2019s base that says he\u2019s neglected inflation \u2014 make clear many of his backers think he\u2019s preoccupied with things that either aren\u2019t worth focusing on or are actively unpopular.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        The malaise\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            When many of these questions were asked in Trump\u2019s first months back in office, there was a palpable sense of enthusiasm with his base.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            When asked to describe their feelings looking ahead to the rest of Trump\u2019s second term, nearly nine in 10 of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents said they were \u201centhusiastic\u201d or \u201coptimistic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Now, that number has dropped all the way to 70%.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And 30% say they\u2019re either \u201cpessimistic\u201d or \u201cafraid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            That 30% who have a negative outlook is pretty remarkable. Shortly after former President Barack Obama was reelected in 2012, just 8% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they felt pessimistic or afraid. And just before former President George W. Bush\u2019s reelection in 2004, only 5% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents said the same about him.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Then there\u2019s the findings of a recent Pew Research Center poll.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            That poll showed 81% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said their midterm vote would be a vote <em>against<\/em> Trump, compared to just 44% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents who said theirs would be a vote <em>for<\/em> Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            There have been signs of this kind of malaise dating back a year, when the Jeffrey Epstein saga exploded.
