\n Todd Blanche\u2019s nomination to be President Donald Trump\u2019s attorney general is hanging in the balance with a key GOP senator saying the Justice Department has not done enough to assure him a controversial $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund won\u2019t move forward.\n <\/p>\n

\n The pushback from Texas Sen. John Cornyn comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee has been planning to advance Blanche\u2019s nomination on Thursday \u2013 but without Cornyn\u2019s support, the vote will fail.\n <\/p>\n

\n Cornyn said Wednesday that a planned meeting with Blanche to discuss his demands for DOJ to formally kill the fund had been canceled. The Texas Republican told CNN he still has not received the written commitment he has been demanding from Blanche and the Justice Department to formally kill the fund. As a result, he told reporters, he is not prepared to vote yes.\n <\/p>\n

\n Asked by CNN if he would block the nomination if the hearing proceeds, Cornyn answered, \u201cI\u2019m not prepared to vote yes. Let me put it that way.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n With Cornyn and fellow Judiciary committee Republican Sen. Thom Tillis still unhappy that the DOJ hasn\u2019t provided a written assurance to kill the fund, it\u2019s unclear whether the committee will proceed with Thursday\u2019s vote. Cornyn said the panel\u2019s chair, Chuck Grassley, will determine around 4 p.m. on Wednesday whether to proceed with Thursday\u2019s session.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo, we still got a little time, and hopefully, they now recognize the seriousness of this, and will be responsive,\u201d Cornyn said, referring to Blanche\u2019s team.\n <\/p>\n

\n A DOJ official told CNN the department, \u201cprovided a written proposal to Senator Cornyn\u2019s staff yesterday following ongoing discussion with both the Committee and the Senator\u2019s office. We look forward to further discussion around any outstanding concerns.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n However, Cornyn told reporters Wednesday that he hasn\u2019t \u201cseen a single piece of writing that is responsive to what I\u2019ve requested.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Blanche has insisted that the \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund \u2014 a controversial pool of money set aside to award people who claim to have been wronged by the Justice Department, including possibly January 6, 2021, rioters \u2014 is no longer happening. The administration had also previously asserted in a court filing that it had abandoned the \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund.\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked if the committee will still vote on Thursday, Grassley said, \u201cYou\u2019ll have to ask Tillis and Cornyn about that.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Some in the Justice Department were surprised by Cornyn\u2019s social media post Tuesday, which made clear he was still not prepared to vote in favor of Blanche. He posted to X that \u201cthere is no \u2018deal\u2019 on Blanche nom. They know what they have to do.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The acting attorney general\u2019s office had been confident that Blanche\u2019s nomination would pass the committee vote. Sources within the Justice Department said there was still some confusion about what exactly would satisfy Cornyn\u2019s push against the \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund.\n <\/p>\n
