His court\u2019s decisions send another<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>11  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Trump told the justices that an appeals court decision in Carroll\u2019s favor would \u201ccause significant damage, not only to this president and future presidents\u201d but also the nation.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            In addition to raising the prospect that Trump should be immune from the litigation, Trump is also asking the court to review whether the United States government should be the defendant rather than the president.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cHere, the president of the United States has been ordered to pay nearly $100 million in damages\u2026for issuing a press release and answering reporters\u2019 questions, from the White House, defending against attacks on his fitness for office,\u201d his attorneys told the court.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The latest appeal comes days after the Supreme Court declined to take up a separate case from Trump in which the president is seeking to unwind a $5 million civil verdict that found he sexually abused and defamed Carroll at a Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Trump has denied wrongdoing in both cases.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The new appeal involves statements Trump made against Carroll in 2019, when he was president, that a jury found were defamatory and ordered him to pay $83 million in damages. A federal appeals court panel affirmed the damages award, finding it \u201creasonable in light of the extraordinary and egregious facts\u201d and rejected several of Trump\u2019s legal challenges. Among them, the appeals court found that Trump had previously waived any claim of presidential immunity and said the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in 2024 involving presidential immunity did not alter their view.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7599\">Ruby Rippey, a former Newsom staffer, offers new details on their affair two decades ago<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            The full 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals declined to revisit that decision in late April.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Both Trump and the Department of Justice signaled at that time that they would appeal to the Supreme Court. Jean Carroll officially receives more than $5M from Trump in sexual abuse and defamation judgment<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>3  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The Justice Department said that it intends to intervene to effectively take over the case under the Westfall Act, which shields individual federal employees from tort suits for actions taken while they were engaged with their official duties. Normally, that might put federal taxpayers on the hook for an employee\u2019s actions, though in this case it would almost certainly mean the end of Carroll\u2019s defamation case.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Carroll claims Trump defamed her when, in 2019, he denied the assault, said she wasn\u2019t his type, and claimed she made it up to boost sales of a book.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThere were no eyewitnesses, no video evidence, and no police report or investigation,\u201d Trump told the Supreme Court in the appeal he filed last year in the case involving the $5 million verdict. \u201cInstead, Carroll waited more than 20 years to falsely accuse Donald Trump, who she politically opposes, until after he became the 45th president, when she could maximize political injury to him and profit for herself.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Trump, meanwhile, is continuing to fight a separate, $5 million case involving Carroll. After sitting on Trump\u2019s appeal in that matter for months, the court denied it during the final days of its term last month.
