The VA secretary has his own numbers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            An FDA investigation has linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants sourced from privately held Taylor Farms\u2019 operations in central Mexico. However, health officials are searching for other potential products that may be making people sick as cases continue to climb.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Widespread contamination could broaden the risk that consumers contract cyclosporiasis from imported produce. Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic disease that causes explosive diarrhea. Removing products from supply chains linked to central Mexico would mitigate those risks, Gottlieb said.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cyclosporiasis-1.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-7215\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/aec1b418fd1a73a58b7f28160c0091b0.jpg\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>CNN<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>Tracking the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>6  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Speaking on CNBC, Gottlieb said \u200bmultiple outbreak clusters, including in the Great Lakes region, New York and North Carolina, appeared to be potentially linked to parsley and cilantro from central Mexico, though investigators have not determined the exact \u200bsource.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think everyone believes that region is suspect,\u201d Gottlieb said. \u201cA lot of that product\u2019s being taken out of supply chains.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He did not identify companies removing products, \u2060and Reuters was not immediately able to confirm which retailers may have stopped sourcing Mexican produce.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Concerns over raw sewage\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Gottlieb said weather conditions had raised the risk of contamination. Here\u2019s what to eat and what to avoid<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>6  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nTaylor Farms has said it voluntarily suspended production of all products at its facility in central Mexico and immediately removed all potentially affected products from the marketplace when questions arose about the source of the outbreak.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The FDA said Taylor Farms agreed to remove affected produce from the market following extensive discussions. But the company did not meet an \u200bestablished 24-hour time frame for determining whether it would take voluntary action after the agency presented it with evidence, according to a source familiar with the situation.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Cases climb\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The U.S. outbreak has resulted in 4,173 laboratory-confirmed \u200bcases, with health authorities aware of more than 7,400 additional suspected cases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Gottlieb said cases were likely underreported, and that the true scope of infection was likely 10 to 20 times \u200cgreater than \u2060the reported case number.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThis is the largest outbreak we\u2019ve ever seen in history of cyclospora,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=7439\">How Trump\u2019s \u2018America first\u2019 administration could shut US scientists out of the next Nobel-worthy discovery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nMichigan on Monday reported 9,253 cases, an increase of 1,077 cases since its last update on Friday. Nobody has ever been able to figure out how<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>7  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            U.S. health authorities from the FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as Mexican sanitary agency SENASICA, carry out regular inspections on site \u200bas well as at the border, Urteaga said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            SENASICA and major U.S. grocers and restaurant chains did not immediately respond to requests for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Mexican authorities said last \u200bweek that irrigation at Taylor \u2060Farms came from certified, company-owned wells. They did not identify health issues with workers, and water samples, as well as lettuce samples, tested negative.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Mexico produces some 550,000 tons of lettuce each year, according to consultancy GCMA, of which half is exported, almost exclusively to the U.S., where it makes up some four-fifths of imported lettuce.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Just five states in central and northern Mexico produce three-quarters of Mexican lettuce.
