The acute event happens quickly but there are steps you can take to lower your risk.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        What is an aortic dissection?\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The aorta is the largest blood vessel in body and the first place blood travels through as it\u2019s pumped from the heart to other parts of the body.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            An aortic dissection occurs when there is a tear in the aorta, which disrupts the critical source of blood flow.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sen. A tear can happen on the inner layer of the aorta, which would create a \u201cfalse passage\u201d for blood, she said \u2014 letting it travel between the layers of the blood vessel instead of reaching important organs.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            A dissection can also tear through all layers of the aorta at once, which \u201cbasically is like your heart exploding,\u201d said \u200bDr. John Trahanas, a cardiac surgeon and co-director of the Aortic Center at Vanderbilt.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        An acute emergency\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            An aortic dissection typically happens suddenly, often without warning.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not something that is slowly progressing over time,\u201d Hamilton said. \u201cThere isn\u2019t this insidious, creeping, on-off chest pain that\u2019s been lingering. When it hits, it\u2019s usually a 10 out of 10 pain.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            It can seem a bit like a heart attack or stroke, experts say. Most often, there is chest pain that radiates to the back. It sometimes presents as leg pain or leg numbness, if the tear is preventing blood from traveling throughout the body more broadly.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            About half of the people who have an aortic dissection will die before they\u2019re able to receive any emergency care because it is such a sudden and severe event.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But for others, receiving care quickly is critical.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Emergency surgery to repair the artery needs to happen within the first couple of hours, Trahanas said. The vast majority of people who are able to have surgery \u2014 about 80% \u2014 will survive, he said. But the risk of dying increases about 2% for every hour that surgery is delayed.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5636\">Capitol Police arrest man with a firearm at north barricade of the US Capitol<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\n        High blood pressure is a key risk factor\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Aortic dissection is rare, but it is more common among men and risk can increase with age. It may also be triggered by a particularly stressful situation among people who have high blood pressure at baseline. According to the medical examiner, Graham\u2019s aortic dissection was \u201cdue to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.\u201d Atherosclerosis \u2014 a condition where fats and cholesterol build up on the artery walls \u2014 is also a risk factor.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Hours before his death, Graham had returned from Kyiv, one of many he visits he had made since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOne might imagine that (Sen. Graham) had a stressful meeting in Ukraine,\u201d Trahanas said, noting that he does not know the specifics of Graham\u2019s case. If his blood pressure was up, it could have caused a tear, \u201cwhich is a very, very sudden event that unfortunately can be fatal,\u201d Trahanas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Sometimes an aortic dissection is \u201cbad luck,\u201d he said, but some people are predisposed due to a family history of aneurysm or connective tissue disorders.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Preventing aortic dissection\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Still, there are a lot of preventative steps that can be taken, experts say.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Managing blood pressure is critical. This can help keep the stress on the aorta to a minimum by limiting how much it has to stretch.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            People who are predisposed to certain risk factors can also get screened and meet regularly with an aortic specialist. Specialized aortic centers \u201ccan provide multidisciplinary care, genetic testing, and have access to clinical trials that may not be available at other centers,\u201d Trahanas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Aortic dissection is \u201cnot a common diagnosis,\u201d Hamilton said \u2014 there are about three to five cases for every 100,000 people each year.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThis isn\u2019t something that the average person should be highly concerned with,\u201d she said. \u201cBut when it happens, the mortality rate is very high.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s important for people to understand their family history, know if they have any modifiable risk factors, pay attention to their blood pressure, and seek specialized care when appropriate.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThis just goes into the whole picture of staying on top of one\u2019s health and understanding that there\u2019s a lot of things out there that can get you,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if you\u2019re able to take care of yourself and modify risk factors as you know about them, that can be helpful.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5634\">Outbreak of diarrhea caused by parasite jumps to more than 3,000 cases<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Sen.
