\n President Donald Trump has not been charitable about politicians\u2019 verbal gaffes.\n <\/p>\n

\n He once played a video of Joe Biden\u2019s verbal stumbles at a 2022 rally. During the 2024 campaign, he ridiculed Biden for mixing up Trump and Kamala Harris, saying, \u201cGreat job, Joe!\u201d And in 2018, Trump joined in the longstanding conservative lampooning of Barack Obama\u2019s misstatement that he had visited 57 states.\n <\/p>

\n \u201cCan you imagine if I said that,\u201d Trump posted on X, adding: \u201cstory of the year!\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In fact, Trump has now said things like that over and over again.\n <\/p>\n

\n That was perhaps best exemplified by an appearance Wednesday at the NATO summit in Turkey, in which Trump made three significant errors \u2014 including calling Iran \u201cthe Islamic Republic of Japan\u201d \u2014 in less than 10 minutes while speaking next to Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky. But he\u2019s had plenty of other gaffes recently.\n <\/p>\n

\n A recap of some of his biggest recent flubs and mix-ups:\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran and Japan\n<\/h2>\n

\n While recounting a clash in Iran, Trump inadvertently referred to the \u201cIslamic Republic of Japan\u201d \u2014 which isn\u2019t a thing.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI told this story yesterday: We had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey were shot at the aircraft carrier over a period of about one hour.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Misnaming the JCPOA\n<\/h2>\n

\n Trump has made a big show of decrying the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal, which was called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA. But at the same event, he flubbed the acronym.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey picked the wrong country, JCPOC,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWhat a terrible \u2014 what a terrible deal.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Zelensky and Vladimir Putin\n<\/h2>\n

\n While seated next to Zelensky, Trump asked the reporters assembled if they had \u201ca question for President Putin.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n (Biden did much the same thing during his own visit to a NATO summit in 2024.)\n <\/p>\n

\n Kelly Loeffler and Nicki Minaj\n<\/h2>\n

\n Two days prior, Trump seemed to mix up Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler with pro-Trump musician Nicki Minaj.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cBut Jeff is great,\u201d Trump said, referring to Loeffler\u2019s husband, Jeffrey Sprecher. \u201cAnd he\u2019s married to a person who\u2019s doing a phenomenal job at the SBA, small business \u2014 Nicki Minaj who\u2019s so incredible. They call it small business, Nicki.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Two minutes later, Trump again introduced Minaj, but intentionally that time.\n <\/p>\n

\n Calling Elon Musk \u2018Leon\u2019\n<\/h2>\n

\n \u201cWe have communication equipment up there that\u2019s nobody\u2019s ever seen before. It\u2019s the highest level and, uh, including Starlink,\u201d Trump said in remarks at a tour of the newly refurbished aircraft being used as Air Force One in June.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cMy friend Leon \u2014 my friend Elon is gonna be very happy.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n During a May event celebrating the Indiana University football national championship, Trump asked where head coach Curt Cignetti was.\n <\/p>\n

\n Cignetti had been standing right next to him the whole time, and Trump had just looked in his direction.\n <\/p>\n

\n Wrongly blaming Obama for the Afghanistan withdrawal\n<\/h2>\n

\n Trump seemed to mix up Obama and Biden, who actually oversaw the withdrawal from Afghanistan.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey lost 13 people leaving an airport \u2014 Obama,\u201d Trump said in May. \u201cThirteen very good people that I got to know their families.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran and Taiwan\n<\/h2>\n

\n A reporter asked Trump in May about how Chinese President Xi Jinping \u201csaid that there was a risk of conflict with the US over Taiwan. What\u2019s your response to that?\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump responded as if the question were about Iran, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a conflict, other than we don\u2019t need their \u2014 their strait.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran and Ukraine\n<\/h2>\n

\n Trump briefly said in April that Ukraine had already lost its war. But it soon became clear he was actually talking about Iran (because he used a talking point he often used for Iran).\n <\/p>

\n \u201cI think Ukraine, militarily they\u2019re defeated, OK?\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t know that by reading the fake news. But militarily, look, their Navy \u2014 so, they had 159 ships.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n During a Women\u2019s History Month event in April, Trump seemed to mix up two women who have served him in prominent roles.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAnd of course, Kellyanne Conway,\u201d Trump said while introducing those assembled. \u201cHas anyone ever heard of her? She\u2019s fantastic. She\u2019s in there fighting. She\u2019s a \u2014 Kellyanne. A man, a friend of mine, said, you know, that Kellyanne, I admire the way she goes in and she screams at those people. She\u2019s got us \u2014 meaning the media.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Conway now works as a strategist, not directly for the administration, and her public role doesn\u2019t generally entail going into a room and jousting with the media. The does describe press secretary Karoline Leavitt\u2019s role, however.\n <\/p>\n

\n Mixing up Greenland and Iceland, repeatedly\n<\/h2>\n

\n During a January speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump repeatedly mixed up Greenland with Iceland.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m helping Europe, I\u2019m helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me,\u201d Trump said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey\u2019re not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you,\u201d Trump added. \u201cOur stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland\u2019s already cost us a lot of money.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Lots of people have mixed up Greenland and Iceland, of course. But relatively few of them have caused international incidents by making acquiring Greenland a key part of their political agenda.\n <\/p>\n

\n South Africa and South America\n<\/h2>\n

\n During a November speech in Miami, Trump described it as \u201ca haven for those fleeing communist tyranny in South Africa,\u201d rather than South America.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump then tried to right the ship.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI mean, if you take a look at what\u2019s going on in parts of South Africa \u2014 look at South Africa, what\u2019s going on. Look at South America, what\u2019s going on,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou know, I\u2019m not going to \u2014 we have a G20 meeting in South Africa. South Africa shouldn\u2019t even be in the Gs anymore, because what\u2019s happened there is bad.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Armenia and Albania\n<\/h2>\n

\n Trump has repeatedly exaggerated his role in ending wars around the globe. But last year he seemed to forget which countries he had supposedly brought peace to \u2014 twice.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou saw the Aber-baijan,\u201d Trump said on a radio show in August, referring to Azerbaijan. \u201cThat was a big one, going on for 34, 35 years with, uh, Albania.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI solved wars that were unsolvable,\u201d Trump claimed in September on Fox News. \u201cAzerbaijan and Albania, it was going on for many, many years, I had the prime ministers and presidents in my office.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In fact, the conflict involved Azerbaijan and Armenia, not Albania. The mix-up became the butt of jokes at a European summit in October.\n <\/p>\n

\n (Again, many people probably mix up Albania and Armenia. But few of them do so while bragging about bringing lasting peace to one of them.)\n <\/p>\n

\n Alaska and Russia\n<\/h2>\n

\n Ahead of a high-stakes summit with Putin, Trump twice said in August that he was going to meet the Russian president in Russia \u2014 instead of the actual location of the summit, Alaska.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m gonna see Putin,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019m going to Russia on Friday.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n He added: \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be a big thing. We\u2019re going to Russia. That\u2019s going to be a big deal.\u201d\n <\/p>
