{"id":5356,"date":"2026-07-09T19:07:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T19:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5356"},"modified":"2026-07-09T19:07:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T19:07:06","slug":"man-accused-of-shooting-two-national-guard-members-hospitalized-after-refusing-to-eat-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5356","title":{"rendered":"Man accused of shooting two National Guard members hospitalized after refusing to eat in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n            The man accused of shooting two National Guard members, killing one, in Washington, DC, in 2025 has been admitted to a city hospital after he refused to eat and sometimes drink in prison as he awaits trial.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5354\">Inside the insurgent rise and rapid downfall of Graham Platner\u2019s campaign<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            During an emergency hearing Thursday, DC federal Judge Amit Mehta said Rahmanullah Lakanwal\u2019s \u201chealth has deteriorated quite substantially.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cMr. Lakanwal\u2019s health circumstances,\u201d Mehta said, \u201cis in some sense self-inflicted.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Mehta added that Lakanwal has refused food and \u201csometimes water.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            According to prosecutors, Lakanwal was admitted to George Washington University Hospital at midnight. They say they were advised by the US Marshal Service of general health issues the defendant faced two weeks ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            During the emergency hearing, Mehta said he would allow prosecutors to see Lakanwal\u2019s medical records from the past 24 hours. Those records, prosecutors said, have been under seal and will help guide them on what the next steps should be.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=5344\">What we know (and don\u2019t know) about how Maine Democrats will replace Graham Platner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Lakanwal, who traveled from Washington state to the capital city in late November before he allegedly ambushed the two officers, pleaded not guilty to the nine charges against him \u2014 including first-degree murder \u2014 in February.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Sarah Beckstrom, one of the National Guard members who was shot in the back of the head, was pronounced dead the next day. The other member, Andrew Wolfe, survived the attack.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Lakanwal worked with the CIA for over a decade in Afghanistan before the US military withdrew from the country.
