{"id":524,"date":"2026-05-26T05:35:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T05:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=524"},"modified":"2026-05-26T05:35:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T05:35:53","slug":"2026-dirty-dozen-produce-nearly-100-tested-positive-for-pesticides-including-forever-chemicals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=524","title":{"rendered":"2026 \u2018Dirty Dozen\u2019 produce: Nearly 100% tested positive for pesticides, including \u2018forever chemicals\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n            Leafy greens such as spinach and kale and perennial kid favorites such as strawberries and grapes held the highest levels of potentially harmful pesticide residues based on government tests, according to the 2026 Shopper\u2019s Guide to Pesticides in Produce.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=518\">What voters say they want for Christmas<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Nectarines, peaches, cherries, apples, blackberries, pears, potatoes and blueberries filled out this year\u2019s \u201cDirty Dozen\u201d most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables, according to the report released Tuesday by the Environmental Working Group, or EWG, a health advocacy organization.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Spinach, which holds the top spot, had more pesticide residue by weight than any other type of produce and contained, on average, four or more different types of pesticides, according to EWG, which has published the annual report since 2004.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Samples of every produce type averaged four or more pesticides, except for potatoes, which averaged two. Consuming produce with multiple pesticides is concerning, experts say, because exposure to mixtures of pesticides may accumulate and raise risk.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            To do the report, EWG examined the most recent pesticide residue tests conducted by the US Department of Agriculture on 54,344 samples of 47 fruits and vegetables.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n the USDA examines each sample, the fruit or vegetable is peeled or scrubbed and thoroughly washed to mimic consumer behavior at home. Even after taking those steps, testing found traces of 264 pesticides \u2014 of those, 203 appeared on Dirty Dozen produce.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Health impacts of pesticides\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Pesticides have been potentiallylinked in past studies to premature births, congenital malformations such as neural tube defects, spontaneous abortions and an increase in genetic damage in humans. Exposure to pesticides has also been associated with lower sperm concentrations, heart disease, cancer and other disorders.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Children are especially susceptible to contaminants such as pesticides, even while in the womb, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pesticide exposure during pregnancy may lead to an increased risk of birth defects, low birth weight and fetal death,\u201d according to the AAP. \u201cExposure in childhood has been linked to attention and learning problems, as well as cancer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Try to vary the different types of fruits and veggies you eat.\" class=\"wp-image-522\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/b5756e06c493f3521303d46792e6b90f.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/b5756e06c493f3521303d46792e6b90f.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/b5756e06c493f3521303d46792e6b90f-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Try to vary the different types of fruits and veggies you eat.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Alexandr Kolesnikov\/Moment RF\/Getty Images<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The Alliance for Food and Farming, which represents organic and conventional produce farmers, has been a long-standing critic of the annual report.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Prior reports by the USDA and the US Food and Drug Administration have shown that when \u201cfarmers use pesticides, they follow the stringent laws and regulations governing pesticide use to provide safe and healthy fruits and vegetables for America\u2019s families, including their own,\u201d an AFF spokesperson said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe mere presence of a residue does not automatically mean something is unsafe. The EPA sets limits on pesticide residues that already include huge safety margins to protect infants and children.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Forever chemicals in our food\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            For the first time, the report found over 60% of all Dirty Dozen samples contain pesticides that are also \u201cforever chemicals\u201d called PFAS. The top three most frequently detected pesticides on produce were these perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            PFAS are called forever chemicals because their molecular bonds can take years to decades \u2014 even centuries\u2014 to completely break down in the environment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe PFAS pesticide is the active ingredient in these products because it\u2019s effective at killing things \u2014 which is the very reason why it\u2019s so concerning to public health and the environment at large,\u201d Bernadette Del Chiaro, EWG\u2019s senior vice president for California operations, told CNN in a recent interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Several PFAS chemicals have been linked to cancer, obesity, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, decreased fertility, liver damage, hormone disruption and damage to the immune system, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.Some of these chemicals can cause harm at levels of a billionth of a gram.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cUnfortunately, there\u2019s no way to contain the harm,\u201d Del Chiaro said. \u201cWe can\u2019t just harm the mold spores or insects on a peach and not potentially harm the little kid that eats the peach. The fact that we\u2019re intentionally spraying forever chemicals on the produce we\u2019re buying at the grocery store is a real eye-opener.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=502\">High blood pressure, heart attacks linked to common preservatives in food<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            A spokesperson for CropLife America, which represents the pesticide industry, told CNN in an email that EWG\u2019s \u201cannual fearmongering campaign promotes distrust in our food system and the tools farmers use to protect their crops against weeds, pests, and diseases.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe facts are that over 99% of tested produce falls well below the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s gold-standard safety limits.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Reducing pesticide exposure from produce\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            As part of the annual report, EWG also creates an annual \u201cClean Fifteen\u201d \u2014 a list of nonorganic produce with the least amount of pesticide residue.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            This year, nearly 60% of the Clean Fifteen samples had no detectable pesticide residues. Pineapple, sweet corn and avocados topped the list as the least contaminated of all produce tested. Next came papaya, onions, frozen sweet peas, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, watermelon, mangoes, bananas, carrots, mushrooms and kiwi.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The solution is not to stop eating fresh produce, expert stress. Fruits and vegetables are the backbone of a healthy diet, so the key is to eat as many different types of fruits and veggies as possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Choosing more of the Clean Fifteen and less of the Dirty Dozen \u2014 or buying organic versions of the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables is an excellent way to reduce pesticide exposure, said EWG science analyst Varun Subramaniam.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Studies have shown that eating more organic than conventionally grown foods can reduce levels of pesticides in humans, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThere are oftentimes organic options in the freezer section, too,\u201d Subramaniam said. \u201cBut if you can\u2019t find organic versions of blackberries, for example, we know any washing is better than none.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            All produce, even organic, should be washed before peeling so dirt and bacteria aren\u2019t transferred from a knife onto the fruit or vegetable, according to the US Food and Drug Administration<strong>.<\/strong> After washing, dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GettyImages-705013069.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-523\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d5672702c76c1368d483303714b851fe.jpg\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>BSIP\/Collection Mix: Subjects RF\/Getty Images\/File<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>Potentially toxic \u2018forever chemicals\u2019 may harm kids during critical period for bone development<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>5  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Firm produce such as carrots, cucumbers, melons and potatoes can be scrubbed with a clean vegetable brush under running water, the FDA said. All other produce can be gently rubbed while being rinsed. There is no need to use bleach, soap or a produce wash \u2014 fruits and vegetables are porous and can absorb those chemicals.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Remove the outermost leaves of cabbage, lettuce and other leafy greens and rinse each leaf carefully \u2014 but don\u2019t blast your greens with water, or you\u2019ll bruise them.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\nExperts said it\u2019s best to use low-pressure water that is warmer than your produce and a colander to spin the greens dry. Don\u2019t forget to wash the colander afterward.
