While much of the case concerns Arizona\u2019s specific procedures for vetting voters\u2019 citizenship status, the dispute also tees up a question with nationwide implications about when election officials can purge rolls.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The NVRA forbids \u201csystematic\u201d voter removals program within\u202f90 days\u202fof an election. Lower\u202fcourts\u202fin the past\u202fhave applied that prohibition toward programs aimed at removing non-citizens from the rolls in mass.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Now Republicans and the Trump administration is arguing that the NVRA\u2019s so-called quiet period does not cover purges aimed at culling non-citizens from the rolls.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The grant of the case comes after the Supreme Court gave a major win to Republicans with a ruling this term that hobbled the use of the Voting Rights Act to challenge redistricting plans. On Monday, the justices punted on another case Republicans were asking it to review, by requesting more briefing on a petition seeking to revive Pennsylvania\u2019s requirement that voters put the data on mail ballot envelopes. That case, if ultimately taken up, would give the higher court the opportunity to further rein in when lower courts can strike down restrictive voting laws.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Arizona dispute\u2019s latest trip to the Supreme Court<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The Supreme Court\u202fwill give a fuller look at the\u202f2022 Arizona law\u202fnext term,\u202fhaving considered it once before on its emergency docket.\u202fThe justices will look specifically at a provision of the law that bars them from registering using Arizona\u2019s state-based registration form.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Previously, the Supreme Court let that requirement go into effect before the 2024 election,\u202fbut the high court\u202flet stand an appeals court ruling halting the proof of citizenship\u202frequirement for mail voting.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Older court precedents\u202fhave\u202festablished that Arizona voters without proof of citizenship can register to vote using the federal voter registration form, but those federal-only voters cannot cast ballots in state or local contests.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=4284\">Supreme Court declines to hear Trump appeal of E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse verdict<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            The scrutiny of Arizona\u2019s voter purge program could drastically change how voter lists are maintained around the country, as the Trump administration and some Republicans have argued that states are not doing enough to keep their voter rolls clean.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Currently, in the 90 days before an election, states can only remove voters from rolls on a one-by-one basis, if the voter asks to be removed to be removed or if there is \u201cindividualized\u201d investigations about the eligibility.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Arizona and other states, however, have pushed for the ability to do data-matching programs within that 90 days, using federal citizenship data programs or state citizen databases. Those programs however, can at times wrongly flag citizens as ineligible voters, leading to concerns that allowing the mass purges so close to the election does not give voters or states time to correct mistaken removals.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Supporters of Arizona and similar laws say the\u202frestrictions\u202fare commonsense regulations that keep voter rolls clean and prevent non-citizen voting. Critics say the laws risk disenfranchising eligible voters \u2013 one survey has shown that 9% of Americans do not have easy access to the citizenship documents, like passports, that qualify\u202funder\u202fthe laws. They\u202fargue that because instances of non-citizen voting are so rare,\u202fthe scant problem\u202fdoes not justify the hurdles the requirements\u202fcould\u202fpose to ballot access.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Trump has made proof-of-citizenship requirements a central focus of his administration.\u202fBut both his efforts in Congress and through\u202fan\u202fexecutive order\u202fto expand the requirement nationwide have been unsuccessful.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Several states have recently passed their own\u202fproof of citizenship laws and are still in the\u202fearly stages\u202fof trying to implement the requirement.
