Jean Carroll sexual abuse verdict<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Located on the outskirts of a town called Fureidis in northern Israel, the cave was due to be affected by construction work when archaeologists decided to investigate it.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Researchers in the 1970s originally thought the cave was used around 200,000 years ago, archaeologist Kobi Vardi of the Israel Antiquities Authority told CNN on Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            However, Vardi and his colleague Ron Shimelmitz, an associate professor in archaeology at the University of Haifa, have now discovered that it was inhabited up to 400,000 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An ancient fallow deer tooth found at the cave\" class=\"wp-image-4288\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/dced7be9b21713aa29836633a5f4a84e.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/dced7be9b21713aa29836633a5f4a84e.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/dced7be9b21713aa29836633a5f4a84e-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>An ancient fallow deer tooth found at the cave<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Emil Aladjem\/Israel Antiquities Authority<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            They determined this after finding flint tools, such as hand axes, scrapers and blades, that are characteristic of the Acheulo-Yabrudian culture of pre-Neanderthal hominins who lived in the area at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Vardi told CNN that \u201cit was a big surprise\u201d to find that the cave was much older than previously thought. It would have been used by members of the Acheulo-Yabrudian culture, who inhabited the Levant, or the Near East, around 400,000-250,000 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The team also found bones from animals such as fallow deer and gazelle.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            This suggests large groups of hominins lived together in the caves, hunting wild animals and using fire, \u201csuggesting complex and rich camp life,\u201d Shimelmitz said in a statement published by Israel\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 11.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            However, to date no significant human remains have been found in any of the caves that have been discovered from this period.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related article\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Neanderthal man at the human evolution exhibit at the Natural History Museum on 19th January 2024 in London, United Kingdom. (photo by Mike Kemp\/In Pictures via Getty Images)<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Mike Kemp\/In Pictures\/In Pictures via Getty Images<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>What happened when humans and Neanderthals hooked up<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>6  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The cave in Fureidis is \u201ca unique site of global importance,\u201d Shimelmitz said in the statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThis time capsule belongs to a unique period at the end of the Lower Paleolithic era, just before Neanderthals and modern humans became dominant and spread across many regions,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=4283\">How to cool down without AC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOnly a handful of sites from this important phase have been uncovered in Israel and the wider Levant, and most of them are inaccessible for research,\u201d Shimelmitz added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The team presented their findings to the construction company, and a road bridge was built to save the cave and keep it accessible for further investigation.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Vardi said researchers are planning extensive studies at the site that will probably take several years.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOur big hope in the excavation of these caves is that maybe we\u2019ll find hominin remains,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re very anxious to meet them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        \u2018Transform our understanding\u2019\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Armando Falcucci, a lecturer in palaeolithic archaeology at the University of Southampton, England, who was not involved in the study, told CNN that the find adds to our understanding of a period of human history that tends to receive limited attention.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWhat makes this find valuable is that it pulls the spotlight back to a much earlier and equally pivotal window (roughly 400,000 to 200,000 years ago); a period of profound behavioural and technological change across both Africa and Eurasia in its own right, including the shift toward intensive, repeated use of caves as central places in the landscape,\u201d he told CNN on Wednesday. He stressed that cave deposits from this period \u201care extremely rare in the region.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe evidence for intensive use of fire at this site is particularly significant,\u201d Falcucci added. \u201cIt is during this period, and at sites of exactly this kind, that habitual, controlled use of fire becomes archaeologically visible, marking a major behavioural threshold in human evolution.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Catriona Pickard, a professor of prehistory and archaeometry, and head of archaeology, at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, who was also not involved in the research, said the findings \u201cprovide rare insights into the material culture and lifeways of early hominins, and as such, the site has the potential to transform our understanding of the Lower Palaeolithic in the Levant.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter.
