Conservative activists want to bring them back in 2028<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Adherence to organized religion is falling in the United States, but defenders of the religious right are ascendant in positions of power in the Trump administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>A <\/strong><strong>report<\/strong><strong> released Friday by the Religious Liberty Commission empaneled by President Donald Trump suggests effectively tearing down the wall between church and state in the United States by providing more public money to religious organizations, giving churches a more direct role in politics.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            But argument from Trump officials thatthe US as a \u201cChristian nation\u201d is at odds with the views of the values of Christians on the left, who think government should do more to help people who need it.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Two new books \u2013 Vice President JD Vance\u2019s midlife Catholic conversion story, \u201cCommunion,\u201d and Senator (and Reverend) Raphael Warnock\u2019s \u201cThe Crooked Places Made Straight\u201d \u2013 preach these opposing views of faith-based politics.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Vance\u2019s politics is explained by his conversion\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Through the lens of his conversion, Vance \u201cargues for prioritizing families over gross domestic product, limiting migration, rejecting universal basic income, and discouraging abortions by improving conditions for new mothers and young children,\u201d CNN\u2019s Steve Contorno writes.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            You can put Vance\u2019s conservative Catholicism alongside the Evangelical faith that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wears on his sleeve when it comes to matters of politics and policy in the Trump administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Like many on the religious right, Vance has taken an adversarial view to the American left.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cFor decades, the left has labored to push Christianity out of national life,\u201d Vance said at the Phoenix memorial for Charlie Kirk last year. \u201cThey\u2019ve kicked it out of the schools, out of the workplace, out of the fundamental parts of the public square. Freedom of religion transformed into freedom from religion.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            At the same event, he pushed the idea, popular in the Trump administration, that despite the lack of overt religiosity in the nation\u2019s founding documents, \u201cBy the grace of God, we always will be a Christian nation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Vance notably wants to involve religion in politics at times, but he has also criticized the first American-born Pope, his church\u2019s spiritual leader, for calling out the heavy handedness of the Trump administration\u2019s immigration crackdown and war on Iran.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        An opposing view of Christianity in politics\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sen. Martin Luther King Jr.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He has wondered aloud how leaders on the right can point to their Christian faith while also blessing the mass deportation efforts of Trump\u2019s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and Trump\u2019s tax and spending cuts bill, which anticipates cuts to Medicaid and food assistance.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI have to ask whether the religion is more performative than substantive,\u201d Warnock told The New York Times in a kickoff interview for his own book tour.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He told CNN\u2019s Laura Coates something similar in December, when he argued Democrats need to reclaim the moral ground of faith.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think we ought to lean into faith,\u201d Warnock said. \u201cWe ought not see the conversation around faith and values to people who are responsible for the largest transfer of wealth we saw with the One Big Beautiful Bill in American history.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related video\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"WARNOCK THUMBNAIL.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-4164\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/91b5b0ca0502fb6c4103e051fb285b55.jpg\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>CNN<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>Sen. Warnock: Democrats have \u201cceded\u201d religion to Republicans<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<span><svg>\n<\/svg>\n<\/span>\n          3:55\n        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            This is a moral argument for Warnock, but appealing to religious voters is a survival tactic for Democrats in a Southern state like his Georgia.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Promising religion in government in a big way\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n             A major theme of Trump 2.0 is that Americans need more religion \u2013 and specifically Christianity \u2013 in their lives.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            President Donald Trump is not known to be very religious, although he won over the religious right on his way to the White House in part by pushing the idea that his political rebirth and survival of assassination attempts were due to divine intervention.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And that\u2019s added to that the biblical language in Hegseth\u2019s war press conferences, the calls by Trump officials to bring religion more into public life, and the use of the Department of Justice to defend against what they see as anti-Christian bias.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=4150\">How Trump\u2019s takeover fractured America\u2019s birthday party<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\n        There are fewer Christians in the US\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Alongside the rise of a US government so focused on Christianity is a drop in the number of voters who describe themselves as Christian.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            In the 2016 election that first brought Trump to power, 23% of voters described themselves as Catholic and 52% described themselves as Protestant or another Christian denomination, according to exit polls. The portion of voters describing themselves as Protestant or another Christian denomination fell in 2024, when just 43% of voters described themselves that way, according to exit polls, while 21% said they were Catholic in 2024. The portion of voters who are White evangelicals went from 26% in 2016 to 23% in 2024, which is not a meaningful shift, but the portion with no religious affiliation went from 15% in 2016 to 24%, nearly a quarter, in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        The MAGA takeover made the GOP more reactionary\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            I asked Melissa Deckman, who is CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, PRRI about the competing messages of Vance and Warnock and the larger trends in American religion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe intermixing of religion and politics is really at an unprecedented level in recent American history,\u201d she said, arguing that while previous modern Republican presidents have paid some lip service to the religious right, Trump has done more to act on their behalf in their policies and with his Supreme Court nominations.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThere\u2019s something going on within the current makeup of the Republican Party \u2013 the MAGA takeover,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cMany people within the MAGA movement, within the GOP, envision a world that the US should be identified more as a Christian nation with conservative Christian goals,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person holds a painting of Jesus wearing a\" class=\"wp-image-4165\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/7efe5ea6a4072cc919a4dc7fc6ac8adc.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/7efe5ea6a4072cc919a4dc7fc6ac8adc.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/7efe5ea6a4072cc919a4dc7fc6ac8adc-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>A person holds a painting of Jesus wearing a &#8220;Make America Great Again&#8221; baseball cap at a march and rally for President Donald Trump on in New York, on October 25, 2020.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>David Dee Delgado\/Getty Images<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            That\u2019s in line with the more controversial idea of Christian nationalism, an ideology rooted in the belief that the United States was founded as a Christian nation and that its laws and institutions should reflect Christian values.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            PRRI recently released the latest in a  on American identity and it includes some interesting trends:\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u25ba <strong>Republicans are getting more comfortable with the term Christian nationalism.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            From the report:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Just 25% of Americans hold favorable views of the term Christian nationalism, compared with\u2026<\/em> <em>Nearly half of Republicans (48%) \u2026 21% of independents and only 10% of Democrats. While support among independents and Democrats has remained relatively stable since 2022, Republicans are increasingly embracing the term, with favorable views rising 12 points, from 36% to 48%.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            PRRI asked people a series of five questions and, depending on those answers, classified people as either adherent, sympathizer, skeptic or rejecter of Christian nationalism, according to Deckman.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<header>\n<span>\n      Related card\n    <\/span>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"christian_nationalism thumb.png\" class=\"wp-image-4166\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d20a400b08e46b69477515f97859e4f5.png\" width=\"256\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>CNN<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n<span>CNN explores the growing influence of Christian nationalism in American society<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<strong>\u25ba Democrats are less likely to see a divine American exceptionalism.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            From the report: <em>While Republican agreement that God has granted America a special role has remained relatively stable \u2014 dipping from 75% in 2012 to 63% in 2022, with about seven in ten agreeing today \u2014 Democratic support has collapsed, falling from 60% to just 27%. Independents declined as well, hitting a low of 35% in 2020 before a modest recovery to 40% in 2026. <\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe Democratic Party, in many ways, is less religious,\u201d Deckman said. \u201cIt\u2019s also more religiously diverse. You tend to have many more non-Christians within the Democratic Party compared to the GOP, but you tend to have a very big cross section of Christians of color,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>\u25ba Most Americans still prefer religious diversity<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            From the report: <em>Nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) would prefer \u201cthe US to be a nation made up of people belonging to a wide variety of religions,\u201d compared with 34% who prefer \u201cthe US to be a nation primarily made up of people who follow the Christian faith. That\u2019s a decline for pluralism since 2022, the first year the question was asked, by PRRI, and when 73% said they preferred a wide variety of religions. Today, a clear majority of Republicans, 60%, prefer the US to be made up of Christians, up from 52% in 2022.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n        Where is all of this heading?\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A church steeple rises in front of evening fog in Lansing, North Carolina on September 30, 2024.\" class=\"wp-image-4167\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0c88f8055a3d28e0d20c47d1871ee823.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0c88f8055a3d28e0d20c47d1871ee823.jpg 768w, https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0c88f8055a3d28e0d20c47d1871ee823-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>A church steeple rises in front of evening fog in Lansing, North Carolina on September 30, 2024.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<figcaption>Bryan Olin Dozier\/NurPhoto\/AP<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            When I asked Deckman what she sees happening with religion in American over the next ten years, she pointed to the rise in the number of people, particularly women, who do not practice a religion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cYoung women are really shedding religious labels for a lot of reasons,\u201d Deckman said, adding that m<em>any women who leave organized religion are unhappy with their faiths\u2019 approach to LGBTQ issues and how many religious traditions view women.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n            There have been periods of religious reawakening in US history, but the data she sees does not suggest that is happening at the moment, in part because of a multi-generational shift away from organized religion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIf you haven\u2019t grown up in a faith tradition, the odds are that you\u2019re not going to necessarily become religious later in life,\u201d said, adding that Vance is an exception to that rule.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            While the data does not show a religious reawakening, she argued Americans could be in need of the kind of connection that organized religion offers.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI do think Americans are craving an authentic face-to-face experience,\u201d she said. \u201cAs we become more isolated and spending more time online, it seems that houses of worship might be that kind of place where people could actually have meaningful interaction, and there are lots of positive things that, you know, being part of a faith community provides.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=4134\">When cybercriminals hire burglars: Inside an alleged Russian effort to infiltrate multibillion-dollar US law firms<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adherence to organized religion is falling in the United States, but defenders of the religious right are ascendant in positions of power in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4157,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4168","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
