\n In the month since President Donald Trump put a decisive end to Sen. Bill Cassidy\u2019s congressional career, the Louisiana senator has become one of the president\u2019s sharpest critics in the halls of the US Capitol.\n <\/p>

\n But as they stood face to face in a Wednesday meeting at the Capitol, the two Republicans unleashed anger at each other in a shouting match in front of dozens of their Senate GOP colleagues.\n <\/p>\n

\n The testy back-and-forth began, according to Cassidy, as Trump demanded to know why members of his own party \u2014 including Cassidy \u2014 voted with Democrats a day earlier to rebuke the president\u2019s military authority in Iran.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI stood and said, \u2018You have not told the American people what\u2019s going on,\u2019\u201d Cassidy recalled after the meeting, describing what he told the president behind closed-doors. \u201cIt was supposed to last four weeks, it\u2019s lasted four months. Our original objectives have not been achieved, and I want to know what\u2019s going on.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n From there, according to multiple sources in the room, a furious Trump went after Cassidy, raising his voice. Cassidy recalled that he \u201clost his temper\u201d and was shouting back at the same \u201ctone and volume\u201d as the president.\n <\/p>\n

\n At one point inside the luncheon, Trump ordered Cassidy to sit down \u2014 but Cassidy refused, another source said. Trump then called him a \u201clunatic.\u201d In return, Cassidy shouted at Trump, in one instance referring to Trump as his \u201cbrother.\u201d Trump told him he wasn\u2019t his \u201cbrother\u201d \u2014 and eventually Cassidy sat down.\n <\/p>\n

\n The tense, roughly 70-minute meeting between Trump and GOP senators comes amid rising tensions as the president has repeatedly upended key pieces of the Republican agenda on Capitol Hill. While Trump has spent much of his second term circumventing Congress to satisfy his own aims \u2014 from firing federal workers, blowing up budgets, even waging a war \u2014 a growing bloc within his party is willing to say they\u2019ve had enough.\n <\/p>\n

\n House and Senate GOP leaders are eager to move beyond some of Trump\u2019s personal priorities \u2014 including an elections overhaul bill that lacks the votes to pass the Senate \u2014 and instead work on cost-of-living issues to tout back home. But they\u2019re confronting a particularly unpredictable version of Trump who seems to care little about the party\u2019s efforts at a carefully coordinated midterm strategy. Inside the Capitol, senior Republicans are exasperated by the president\u2019s behavior over the last several weeks, with some insisting he is getting \u201cbad advice\u201d from his team, according to multiple GOP sources.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey\u2019re pretty exasperated by it all,\u201d said one Republican who\u2019s spoken with several vulnerable GOP lawmakers, describing them as increasingly dismayed by Trump\u2019s declining approval ratings. \u201cThey see the same data everyone else sees, but they also don\u2019t want to get into a position where they\u2019re in a sniping match with the president.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Cassidy said the friction during Wednesday\u2019s lunch was so intense that, \u201cat some point my guys next to me said, \u2018ok, Bill, sit down,\u2019 and so I sat down and tried to de-escalate.\u201d But that did little to immediately ease tensions. One White House official afterward said Cassidy had \u201ctotally embarrassed himself,\u201d characterizing him as \u201cunhinged\u201d as the president tried to explain the status of ongoing talks.\n <\/p>\n

\n One reason only Cassidy pushed back on Trump is because the president dominated the podium and didn\u2019t leave time for senators to speak or question him, according to frustrated Republican senators and aides.\n <\/p>\n

\n The closed-door lunch came one day after Trump publicly vented frustration with the four Republican senators, including Cassidy, who had voted to rein in his Iran war powers. \u201cFour Republican Losers voted with the Dumocrats,\u201d Trump said on Truth Social Tuesday night after the Senate vote, which he called \u201cpoorly timed and meaningless.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n One person briefed on the meeting said that Trump\u2019s ire was not just directed at Cassidy, but more broadly at all of the Republicans who voted against him on Iran, and those who had missed the vote. One senator said Trump felt undermined by that symbolic vote.\n <\/p>\n

\n Sen. John Kennedy told reporters after the closed-door lunch that, \u201cthe president was and is mad as a murder hornet about the war powers vote yesterday.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump later hinted at his frustrations, even as he insisted that the meeting had gone \u201creally great.\u201d\n <\/p>

\n \u201cI don\u2019t like a few people, but that\u2019s okay,\u201d he said. \u201cI think you know who they are.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Just hours earlier, Trump had torched plans to celebrate recently passed legislation \u2014 the largest housing affordability bill in a generation \u2014 at a press conference with top Republicans. Instead, he decided not to sign it at all \u2014 stepping all over any plans to tout an effort to address cost-of-living concerns.\n <\/p>\n

\n And even with a potentially crippling midterm ahead for the GOP, Trump is refusing to acknowledge that his biggest legislative wish-list item \u2014 the \u201cSAVE America Act\u201d \u2014 doesn\u2019t have the votes. Trump spent much of his remarks to the GOP senators focused on that elections bill, which Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama described as \u201cthe best speech I\u2019ve seen him give.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe got emotional at times, basically talking about how Communism is taking over, this will be our last shot, if we don\u2019t bust the filibuster,\u201d Tuberville said, referring to the New York primary elections the night before, where a slate of candidates endorsed by democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani won.\n <\/p>\n

\n Tuberville, the celebrated former Auburn football coach, compared it to a coach\u2019s halftime speech: \u201cYou know, \u2018we don\u2019t have much time left.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump specifically argued that the Mamdani-backed candidates winning elections in New York was a sign that they needed the SAVE America Act, according to one Republican senator in the meeting.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the end, it was one of Trump\u2019s loyalists, Sen. Rick Scott, who tried to convey to Trump that there are simply not enough Republican votes to pass his elections bill in Congress.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI said, \u2018This is where we are today,\u2019\u201d Scott of Florida said, recounting the meeting. \u201cI\u2019m a business guy. You have to live in reality.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n But it wasn\u2019t clear if that message sunk in for Trump. Scott said Trump is focused on passing the bill through whatever means necessary: \u201cHe really believes it\u2019s a key to this fall.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who Trump has grown frustrated with behind the scenes as the elections bill has stalled in the Senate, said he couldn\u2019t tell if Trump was swayed by the senators\u2019 own math on the vote count.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe president made his views very clear, which we know how he feels on it. I\u2019m not sure what the takeaway was for him regarding that, but I think it\u2019s fair to say that we\u2019ve made the point a number of times,\u201d Thune said. \u201cThat is not a conclusion he would like us to draw but it\u2019s what I have to say.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Sen. John Cornyn \u2014 who, like Cassidy, is an outgoing Senate Republican who lost to a Trump-backed primary challenger \u2014 quipped upon leaving the meeting that Trump offered \u201cquite the unity message.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe president closed by preaching unity, but he spent the entire hour talking about things which were not exactly unified,\u201d Cornyn added.\n <\/p>\n
