He was instantly inspired by the organization\u2019s mission to help the nation\u2019s poor and was determined to figure out a way to improve the speed at which dentures could be delivered.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The problem?\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He knew nothing about dentistry or 3D printing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cHonestly, if you told me three years ago, this is what I would be doing, I would have called you crazy,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        \u2018Beyond blessed\u2019\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Gibson has since outfitted thousands of Americans with free dentures. He\u2019s seen burly men with tattoos weep when they first look into a mirror to see their new smile. The same goes for elderly widows. He calls them \u201cmirror moments.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The reaction never gets old.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThat first delivery was really a huge eureka moment,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cHonestly, it humbled me.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<video>\n<\/video>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Gibson fits the 3D printed teeth into the gum component as part of the process of making a new set of dentures in the Mobile Digital Dental Lab for a Remote Area Medical (RAM) patient.<\/span>\n<figcaption>Remote Area Medical \/ Eric Hutchinson<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Reflecting on that first patient, he paused. \u201cSomething that I was able to have a hand in makes a grown man burst into tears,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cTo see that raw, human emotion and just know that I played a change in this person\u2019s life \u2026 it\u2019s very humbling, and I\u2019m beyond blessed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He added, \u201cSince then, it\u2019s all just like fireworks every weekend. That\u2019s what we\u2019re striving for \u2014 to get more and more of those mirror moments. It\u2019s something you can\u2019t truly describe unless you\u2019re there.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            On weekends, when RAM\u2019s pop-up clinics operate in full swing, he sleeps in what is known as the \u201cmobile digital denture lab,\u201d with its two 3D printers humming 24\/7 until all patients are outfitted. Gibson recently set a personal record of 35 dentures printed in a weekend.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The only frustrating thing about the job, he said, is not being able to serve everyone. As word spreads about a RAM clinic, people line up by the hundreds \u2014 many times by the thousands \u2014 seeking help for everything from new glasses to dentures to medical care.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cYou have people that are really down on their luck,\u201d he said. \u201cThe reality is we\u2019re all one slip or one fall away from needing two teeth in the front \u2026 just to be able to smile again.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            In the US, about 72 million adults, roughly 27% of the population, do not have dental insurance. These are the people RAM seeks to help. Even for those who have Medicare \u2014 the US federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older \u2014 in most cases it doesn\u2019t cover dental services like routine cleanings, fillings or items like dentures and implants.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Carrying out Stan Brock\u2019s legacy\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Remote Area Medical has served over 1 million patients and provided nearly $240 million in care since its founding in 1985, thanks to the charity\u2019s 230,000 volunteers.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            It was founded by the late Stan Brock, the captivating British cowboy who co-starred in \u201cMutual of Omaha\u2019s Wild Kingdom\u201d television series in the 1960s and \u201970s, before making it his life mission to provide free healthcare to underserved communities across the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThere\u2019s 50 million people out there that are not getting the care that they need. They simply can\u2019t afford it, and we need to do something about it,\u201d he said in the award-winning 2020 documentary \u201cMedicine Man: The Stan Brock Story.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            RAM\u2019s CEO Chris Hall first joined the charity in 2013. At the time, the organization held about 12 events a year. It changes the community around them. It gives them life again.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        \u2018I made it my mission\u2019\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            It was the documentary on Brock that first inspired Gibson. He saw the film at a movie theater in 2023 with his father.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThat movie really opened my eyes when it comes to where our nation is right now,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            A native of rural Seymour, Tennessee, Gibson had never heard of RAM \u2014 let alone that it was headquartered in his backyard. He immediately began volunteering, first escorting people to and from the various vision, dental and medical areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            At the time, Gibson was an engineering student at Walter State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee, a town of more than 33,000 people \u00ad\u2014 best known for the filming of the 1981 horror movie \u201cThe Evil Dead.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gibson self-taught himself about 3D printing. They used the traditional method to make dentures, involving molding and casting and repeat patient visits. The whole process could take up to three months.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            To Gibson, it seemed clunky, antiquated and completely inefficient.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWhat\u2019s funny is Connor came to us with no dental experience at all,\u201d said Hall. \u201cConnor self-taught himself the majority of the dental anatomy and the terms and vocabulary of the dental industry to take this project and move it forward.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Gibson took the same approach with 3D printing. He had trained in computer-aided design (CAD), learning how to use software to make designs. What happened next changed everything we know about inflammation<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div>6  min read<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI made it my mission and studied up like I was doing a test, studying up on videos and documents \u2014 anything I could find on how to make a denture using this specific software and how to 3D print it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He ultimately devised RAM\u2019s Mobile Digital Denture Lab, allowing the organization to outfit patients the same weekend and shrinking denture delivery from three months to just a few hours and reducing costs in the process.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            When he first came up with the idea, Gibson said he got turned away at 3D printing conventions whenever he approached vendors and asked if they might want to partner. At a dental convention in Las Vegas a couple years ago, Hall said Gibson was recognized as a \u201cleading expert in the expansion of digital dentistry.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<video>\n<\/video>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<span>Gibson grabs a newly printed set of teeth from the 3D printer in RAM&#8217;s mobile denture lab in preparation for assembling a set of dentures for a patient.<\/span>\n<figcaption>Remote Area Medical \/ Eric Hutchinson<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cWe laughed about it about it afterwards because as we were walking back to our hotel room, he couldn\u2019t even stop in the casino,\u201d Hall said. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t old enough to do that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Hall added, \u201cHe\u2019s a truly wonderful person, and we\u2019re honored to be in the same room.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Bridging the gap\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Not the type to give up, Gibson secured RAM\u2019s first printers through grants.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Gibson isn\u2019t the first person to 3D print dentures.
