He echoed that Tuesday, telling Megyn Kelly that the US wouldn\u2019t let the United Arab Emirates, for example, \u201cinvest in Iran, unless the Iranians change their behavior.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Fair enough.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Except these are distinctions that Republicans \u2014 and Trump especially \u2014 have dismissed or even excoriated in the past.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And that\u2019s when the dollar amount was significantly smaller than $300 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            When the Obama administration and other countries cut a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, it included giving Iran access to billions of dollars. In that case, it wasn\u2019t money from other countries, but instead Iran\u2019s own assets that had been frozen in foreign banks under sanctions. Estimates generally placed the dollar figure around $50 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            But this nuance was almost always absent from Trump\u2019s rhetoric. He said the concession amounted to providing the world\u2019s leading sponsor of terrorism with a financial windfall, even falsely claiming it was in \u201ccash.\u201d He cast it as unthinkable and a sign of American leaders\u2019 weakness and poor negotiating skills.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Those comments could come back to bite him today.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIran receives a windfall of $150 billion, which will no doubt fund terrorism around the world,\u201d he wrote in a September 2015 op-ed in USA Today. Trump often cited the inflated figure of $150 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He said that same month in Oklahoma City that \u201cwe\u2019re giving them $150 billion in order to create terror all over the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            At a December 2015 Republican presidential debate, Trump called it a \u201chorrible, disgusting, absolutely incompetent deal with Iran where they get $150 billion,\u201d adding: \u201cThey\u2019re a terrorist nation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI just don\u2019t understand how we could have made a deal where we\u2019re giving somebody that\u2019s a terror nation $150 billion,\u201d he said the next month in Iowa City.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The situations aren\u2019t completely parallel, in that unfrozen Iranian assets aren\u2019t the same as money from other countries. They paid all of that money in cash.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            (Again, the US did not pay the money in cash, and it wasn\u2019t $150 billion.)\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            He added after ordering the killing Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020 that \u201cthe Obama administration enabled and emboldened the Iranian regime. Can you imagine?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            (The $1.7 billion refers to a settlement reached over $400 million in Iranian funds that were frozen in 1979.)\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe Iran nuclear deal signed by President Obama gave them $150 billion, and that\u2019s when the real terror started,\u201d Trump added the next day in an interview with Fox News.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            And toward the end of the 2020 campaign, Trump repeatedly predicted that, if Joe Biden won the election, similar deals would result.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIf Biden ever got in, they\u2019d give them another $150 billion, like they did,\u201d Trump said in August 2020 in Yuma, Arizona. \u201cThe dumbest deal I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIran will make another crazy deal where they give them $150 billion or $1.8 billion in cash,\u201d he said in October 2020 in Tampa.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Even after losing the 2020 election, while campaigning for GOP Senate candidates in Georgia runoffs, Trump warned of a repeat.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think they want to start it up again. Can you believe this?\u201d Trump said in Valdosta, Georgia. \u201cI wonder if they\u2019ll give them $150 billion?
