{"id":1853,"date":"2026-06-05T21:07:35","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T21:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1853"},"modified":"2026-06-05T21:07:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T21:07:35","slug":"what-else-do-we-have-maine-democrats-signal-theyll-stick-with-graham-platner-some-with-regret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1853","title":{"rendered":"\u2018What else do we have?\u2019 Maine Democrats signal they\u2019ll stick with Graham Platner, some with regret"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<cite>\n<span>Portland, Maine<\/span><span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/cite><\/div>\n<p>\n            Graham Platner is still likely to win Maine\u2019s Democratic Senate nomination in Tuesday\u2019s primary \u2014 but some voters in the state who once were excited by his campaign now say they\u2019ll hold their noses while casting their ballots after a series of negative reports about his personal behavior.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1849\">First on CNN: DOJ sends prosecutor to observe LA ballot counting amid Trump\u2019s baseless \u2018cheating\u2019 claims<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            Speaking to CNN in Portland, Maine, Sandra Braden said she doesn\u2019t have \u201ca lot of faith\u201d Platner has changed as he says he has, nor does she believe his assertion that he didn\u2019t know the origins of a tattoo with Nazi-linked iconography that he\u2019s since had covered.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Still, Braden said, she\u2019ll take a chance on Platner \u201cif he votes the way I want him to and he can defeat Susan Collins.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI\u2019m going to vote for him, yeah, but I don\u2019t like it. I\u2019m not in favor of all that s**t,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Platner, the Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer whose populist campaign drew widespread notice among Democrats but has been rocked by a series of scandals in recent months, is still likely to secure the nomination Tuesday. He\u2019s repeatedly said he won\u2019t drop out and already boxed out Gov. Janet Mills of Maine, a top party recruit who suspended her campaign but remains on the ballot.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The latest blow to Platner\u2019s campaign came in a New York Times story published Thursday in which three of Platner\u2019s ex-girlfriends described volatile and \u201ctoxic\u201d relationships, including allegations of heavy drinking, infidelity, demeaning behavior toward women and, in one account, physical intimidation.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Platner \u201cstrongly disputes\u201d any claims of physical intimidation or altercations, his campaign said. And he has denied knowing about the origins of the tattoo before he entered the race last fall.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The race against five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine is critical to Democrats\u2019 chances of flipping four GOP-held seats and winning a Senate majority in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Another Maine voter, Woody Hayward, told CNN that Maine needs \u201cfresh blood\u201d representing the state in the Senate. Hayward said reports about Platner\u2019s tattoo of a Nazi symbol and other controversies are \u201ctroublesome\u201d and \u201cdisheartening for sure.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cBut what else \u2013 what else do we have, right?\u201d he asked.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Zoo Cain was \u201cnot really interested in the guy\u2019s foibles,\u201d and has seen Platner speak and is interested in his vision.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cHe\u2019s got some baggage,\u201d Cain said. \u201cBut way less baggage than the oligarchy, as far as I can tell.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Platner is set to return to the campaign trail Friday evening in Bar Harbor, where he and other Democratic candidates in Tuesday\u2019s primary will attend a rally with progressive California Rep. Ro Khanna. Platner is also set to hold a town hall Sunday in Portland, and \u2014 in a sign he is already planning past the primary \u2014 his campaign scheduled a virtual town hall next Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Where Janet Mills stands\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            Platner said Thursday he had not considered ending his campaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt has never crossed our mind to drop out of this thing,\u201d Platner said in an interview with MS NOW, referring to him and his wife, Amy. \u201cI am fully committed to this till the end.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            National Democrats may have limited influence to push him out of the race anyway. After all, Mills suspended her Senate bid after being a prized recruit to challenge Collins.\n    <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Maine Gov. Earlier Friday, a source close to her told CNN she is getting encouragement to reenter the state\u2019s Senate primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe Governor remains on the ballot, and in the wake of this week\u2019s stories, people across Maine are reaching out to tell her they\u2019re voting for her and encouraging her to get fully back into the race,\u201d the source said.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1846\">First on CNN: House member\u2019s chief of staff charged with carrying a gun into US Capitol complex<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            The source did not say whether Mills has decided to resume active campaigning, weeks after she suspended her bid amid struggles with fundraising and with Platner holding a dominant lead in polls. But the statement is the second time in a week that Mills has signaled that she remains on the ballot as an alternative to Platner, after an interview with the Portland Press-Herald.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            A former Mills supporter, ex-state Sen. Lynn Bromley, told CNN after the Times story was published that she still expected Platner to win the primary but hoped he would drop out afterward and let the state party identify a replacement nominee.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cIf she came up with 20% with a suspended campaign, that says a lot,\u201d Bromley said, referring to Mills.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            During an MS NOW interview Thursday night, Platner bristled slightly at the prospect of Mills regaining support. Asked about her reminder that she is still on the ballot, he called it \u201ca bit of opportunism.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Beth Dindas, a Maine Democratic voter, told CNN that Platner lost her when he denied knowing about the origins of his tattoo. She said Platner now \u201chas no credibility whatsoever.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            She added that she supports Mills \u201call the way.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think that ultimately, unfortunately, we\u2019re going to lose this race again and we\u2019re going to have six more years of Susan Collins, who has let down the people of Maine time after time,\u201d Dindas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Another Democratic voter in Portland, Bonnie Depp, acknowledged that Platner has \u201cmade some stupid comments,\u201d but that she believes his claims that he did not know his tattoo was a Nazi symbol. She said he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after his time in the military and deserves a break.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            As for Mills, Depp said: \u201cI think she was a wonderful governor \u2013 I voted for her both times, I respected many things that she did. But it\u2019s time for newer blood and as a boomer, I can say that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI got until Tuesday to decide, but I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019ll vote for him. I don\u2019t think a lot of this crap is anybody else\u2019s business,\u201d Depp said.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n        Some Democrats hold him at arm\u2019s length\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            The chatter about Mills comes as some Democrats who previously indicated support for Platner sought to keep him at arm\u2019s length ahead of Tuesday\u2019s primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            After Mills dropped out, a leading contender for the state\u2019s battleground 2nd Congressional District, state Sen. Joe Baldacci, said he \u201clook[ed] forward to working with [Platner] in Washington.\u201d Asked about Platner on Friday, a top adviser to Baldacci\u2019s campaign, Jared Bornstein, said in a statement that Baldacci \u201cis focused on finishing the primary strong and defeating Paul LePage,\u201d the presumptive GOP nominee.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Another candidate for the 2nd District, Matt Dunlap, called on Democrats to unify behind Platner after Mills dropped out and was set to attend Khanna\u2019s rally with Platner.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Democrats outside Maine are talking about Mills, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Pennsylvania Sen.
