{"id":1849,"date":"2026-06-05T20:06:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T20:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1849"},"modified":"2026-06-05T20:06:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T20:06:36","slug":"first-on-cnn-doj-sends-prosecutor-to-observe-la-ballot-counting-amid-trumps-baseless-cheating-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1849","title":{"rendered":"First on CNN: DOJ sends prosecutor to observe LA ballot counting amid Trump\u2019s baseless \u2018cheating\u2019 claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n            The Justice Department sent one of its attorneys to observe ballot processing in Los Angeles Friday morning, the county\u2019s elections office told CNN, after President Donald Trump claimed earlier this week the US Attorney\u2019s office there was investigating the vote counting.\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1846\">First on CNN: House member\u2019s chief of staff charged with carrying a gun into US Capitol complex<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            A spokesperson for the county registrar-recorder said \u201cour office was notified late yesterday that the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office would send an Assistant U.S. Attorney to the Ballot Processing Center to observe ballot processing activities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe individual arrived this morning, was provided an overview of the public observation program, and participated in a walkthrough of the ballot processing operations,\u201d the spokesperson, Mike Sanchez said in an email, noting that ballot processing in the county is open to public observation.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Trump has claimed repeatedly, without evidence, that the slow pace of the count from Tuesday\u2019s primary was a sign of Democratic \u201ccheating.\u201d Several key races in the state have not been called, and California has long had a reputation for being slow to report the results. This is, in part, because a significant number of the total votes come in as mail ballots that are dropped off Election Day, according to the California Voter Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the election process.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The Justice Department did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            Earlier Friday, First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli \u2014 a Trump appointee who leads the Los Angeles-based US Attorney\u2019s office \u2014 said his office had \u201cmultiple election fraud investigations underway\u201d in a social media post that bashed California\u2019s election system.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The US attorneys office in LA confirmed that one of its lawyers was sent to observe the ballot counting, but did not respond to CNN\u2019s inquiry about whether that move was connected to the fraud investigations Essayli touted on social media.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n            The county registrar-recorder\u2019s office has defended its processes, writing on social media Thursday that its \u201cdedicated staff is working hard to ensure that every vote is accurately processed and verified for counting.\u201d\n    <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationtimess.com\/?p=1844\">Takeaways from the appeals court hearing on the White House ballroom project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n            The Los Angeles County District Attorney\u2019s Office told CNN in a statement that it had \u201cnot received any complaints from the federal government regarding criminal misconduct related to vote-counting or fraud in the Los Angeles County primary election.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong>Closely watched races<\/strong>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n            California this year has two marquee races \u2014 the governor\u2019s race and the contest for Los Angeles mayor \u2014 that feature prominent Republicans. This happens because votes cast in person on Election Day are almost entirely reported on election night, while the votes counted later are predominately mail ballots.
